Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

ah sure Paddyland exclusive problem you can be sure....
It would seem odd to me that a mobile operator would not have a licence to operate the entire set of GSM services. But then we did look for stupid money for these licences in the first place.

Edit: Actually it looks like 3 have a similar arrangement in place in most markets. They having a roaming agreement with Orange in the UK.

Has a similar issue been reported on 3 in the UK? If not, I'd imagine the problem is specific to 3 Ireland's implementation of their roaming agreement and not a handset issue.

...I believe it's the iphone at fault or software or something but it is not the 3G network itself, there's more to it. Maybe i'll be proved wrong with a software update but I doubt it.

I think you're right. Some of us (on 3) aren't having any trouble at all, I've been all over Dublin and never noticed anything. The thing couldn't be working better for me. I didn't port my old VF number over, just took a new 3 one.

Explain to me how I had 3-4 bars of 3G signal yesterday, couldn't access internet sites, and was getting 0kpbs download speeds from speedtest then? And this was going on for ages, up to 15 minute stretches of this.

The preferring VF dataless has to change, and this probably is peculiar to three.

Garbled text in the appstore? Is that the phones fault?

Can't make sense of that at all. 3 bars and no access to internet? Crazy.

Was there not meant to be a release due to the signal bars incorrectly displaying

Thats got nothing to do with it.

    I was getting 1.5mb uploads,0kpbs down.

That is not the phones fault.

A quick search reveals that three customers in the UK were having trouble accessing the appstore too. It's possible that 3 transparently proxy all their traffic and it's doing something to appstore-bound traffic. It all works on XML afaik so if they're proxying everything, then it's possible that they are also messing with stuff and making changes to the files while in transit. This would cause the appstore to freak out and display stuff all wrong.

Couldn't make any more guesses through without seeing a screenshot of the issue. Anyone?

Yep, that been sorted. Anyone who got a new phone recently should have the latest OS, afaik.

Ask, and Slasher_65 shall provide, even though he is a bit miffed that he had the chance to take this screenshot.

This is the kind of thing that usually happens when a page has been screwed with before being passed back to the application.

The AppStore is basically a web browser. It's just quite specialist. When you click a link in the AppStore, it goes and fetches a new web page, but it expects that web page to be in a very specific format. If the web page is not in that format, it will often just interpret everything as text and dump the contents of the file to the screen (instead of formatting it nicely).

My guess here is that Three's proxy is either adding in or stripping out a tag from the start of the file (maybe they add in their own code for traffic counting or advertising), or it's altering one of the headers as the file gets passed back.

I presume this problem goes away if you use the AppStore over WiFi?

Unfortunately since the iOS is so locked down, there's little more you can do than tell Three to sort their **** out.

Will do just that when I get home from work. Will request to be put on to an iPhone specialist, if they have one. Or just anybody who knows anything about the Irish Phone Network Situation.

I should point out that it only happens SOME of the time, though. Maybe 1/5 the pages I load end up like this.

Just over in The Square for lunch. I wanted to pop into 3 to see if they had a micro sim upsizer, going to a festival next week and don't wanna take the iPhone. Of course, they don't have any, can't blame them really.

I was one of the lucky ones that was not having issues but as I was in the square I lost 3G signal when I needed it, tried toggling Airplane mode and 3G and nothing. Eventually it cam back. I asked the guy in 3 when was the fix going to be in place and he said as far as he knows, it is done. Well obviously not if it took 15 minutes for me to get a 3G signal in a place that there definitely is one!!!

    Happens to me too...

I'm emailing their customer support. Same old rubbish though - they want me to call to provide technical assistance.

I told them to call me if they think they can offer assistance since I've reset network settings, turned on data roaming, selected automatic and 3g from carrier and none of it works.

    Also sites like

    urbandictionary.com
    4gifs.com

    are blocked.

And all this in addition to the appstore problem.

Asked them to escalate to management and get their ass on boards.ie.

Neither of which will be done, I'm sure.

Everyone should keep emailing, ringing and threatening the bejaysus out of customer support until we get the attention of someone who makes decisions.

Aha. I would suggest then that their transparent proxy is caching the pages and the appstore freaks out a little bit because you're getting an old version of the page you're looking at instead of the most recent one.

Tbh, this is caching proxy 101 stuff, it should be easy for Three to sort out.

From the tests i've carried out it appears it is. Why can I get 0 upload on an iphone yet over 1mb on an x10 in the same seat at the same time,

This is 3G data problem happening in networks around the world, http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2010/07/02/apple-iphone-4-plagued-by-3g-data-connectivity-issues/#comments

I've seen it first hand, there's more than one problem with the phone and a free bumper won't fix this one.

Sounds like it - its a good sign anyway.

Is your carrier set to automatic?

    Data romaing on or off?

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 3,331 ✭✭✭Splinter

No it was set to 3 3G and yes data roaming is on

    This is interesting...

This site tells you how to figure out which week your iPhone 4 was manufactured. Mine was made on week 28 (3rd week in July). I haven't had any issues with the 3 network.

Can people with issues let us know what week number your iPhone was made on?

Three just phoned me about the FaceTime issues. Then put ME on hold. Impressive organization there. Waiting on hold at the moment.

That's hilarious. Think they'd have all the info at hand for a call back.

Is this about Facetime charges? Let me know how you get on. I've only been charged once, cos I used it once, my gf used it a few times with her sis in England and looks like she's charged all the time.

Quality was fantastic though, hope they release it on 3G, or I'll just use 3G unrestrictor.

"The FaceTime issues are known about and we have esculated them to the highest priority within Apple, and we will take care of any issues you are having, don't worry about it." (including charges, it sounds like.)

As for the 3G switching issues, I was then sent to an iPhone specialist, who said that the problems should now be solved, if your carrier reads '3 Ireland 7.1' in the Settings > General > About area, and suggested that if I was still having problems, I should first reset network settings, and then manually select the 3 (3g) carrier myself. A note was added to my account, saying that if I were to phone back I should be esculated back up to iPhone technical support and we would work through the issues then.

Looks like 3 are starting to get their support together! The first women I was talking too was very helpful and friendly, and after checking with a supervisor informed me that everything would be taken care of. The man in iPhone technical support was equally friendly and helpful, and really sounded like he knew what he was talking about, instead of just reading off a script.

Let's see how this works then!

It just struck me that I should have asked them about the seemingly random blocking of websites, and the App Store issue. Maybe I will take advantage of my note on the account saying that I should be sent to the people who know what they are talking about a little bit later...

Week 29 here - all the problems others have reported i have
    2g/3g issue
when 3g is on no internet
    App store garbaged text
    **** proxy server blocking everything

Week 28 on mine, haven't had any problems.

Ok, I know I just bitched a bit about losing signal, but I checked and my Data Roaming had switched off, so that could be the reason. I never had issues up til now. Must have reverted to default when I jailbroke yesterday.

I'm actually happy enough so far.

The felleh who rang me from three ran through a few different fixes, but never mentioned this one. Do we have proof that this fixes the issue, or might it be a placebo fix? (IE you think it fixes it simply because after you turn it on you don't notice the network dropping)

The problem must be fixed caus there hasn't been an update to this thread in almost an hour

I wonder if this forum will end up having it's very own 'THREE PROBLEM M-M-MEGATHREAD!' like the Midband forum. It's getting rather close to megathread status, with 513 posts!
