    Hi
I have a 10 month old rottie.the other day he chewed his lead into 2 pieces! Since then I've been looking for a new one, A decent strong one as everyone knows rotties are strong dogs, Anyway I've been to 4 different pet shops looking for one and they only have small ones, I would ideally like a chain one but the pet shops only have flimisy chains that would barely hold a lap dog. Anybody know where i would get a decent lead?what price?

Go for nylon rope leads very strong and easy on the hands! Also can be picked up cheap!

These bad boys can are very sturdy and very well made. They come in thinner and thicker varieties (depending on the dogs strength) but the thicker ones are really strong. The metal clip is really reliable and I have walked big and small dogs with mine, and it has stood the test of time (where so many others failed!). One big disadvantage is that they are very easy to get rope burn from so generally I wear gloves when walking stronger dogs on them, but if your dog is not a puller they are fine on the hands.

Chain leads are also a very good option, but you would want to get the jumbo ones for a big dog. Their big downfall is the strap (where your hand goes) can wear (esp if you have a puller!) so get a good quality one so that it doesn't snap while you are walking your dog.

Most big pet stores in Dublin and around the country have some sturdy leads, I would expect to pay maybe €15 for a good one (if not more) but it's worth it for the time it lasts! I know Petmania and the pet store in Blanchardstown sell good leads but I can't think of anywhere else I have bought them (I know I have, just can't remember).

Also, because you have a big dog, it may be an idea to invest in a harness (head ones are best for control) like a Halti. They work miricles for pullers and it's good to get the dog used to it when it is young.

I use this one for my 8 month old akita , it's strong , easy on the hand and is showing no signs of being chewed unlike the noby ones i was using before it ;)

If you do get a non-chain lead either soak it in washing up liquid and warm water and leave it to dry, put tea tree oil on it or spray some perfume etc.....no more lead chewing. :D
