DD-WRT or OpenWRT. DD-WRT is more friendly if you're new at this. Tomato is also popular, but I've no personal experience of that one.

Running DD-WRT on that model. Haven't tried the other open firmwares but would certainly recommend DD-WRT over the Linksys firmware.

It says it is supported on that link. You have a WRT54GS, not the WRT54G.

sorry my bad, feel like an idiot got the two of them mixed up. gonna try that dd-wrt one.
I'd like to be able to monator the download usage with the router :)

which method will I use from this site
    http://dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Linksys_WRT54GS_v7.0_%26_7.2#How_To_Flash

the 2nd method is that correct?
    just download "VXWorks-killer : WRT54GS v7"
and flash it from within the modems admin page?
and then do the tftp cmd
**edit trying to go into windows feature to enable tftp( and the box is just blank, any ideas?

    Hi Lenny,

you'lll have to forgive me its been a long time since I've done this.

its handy to have a command window in the background with
    ping -t 192.168.1.1
This will tell you when your router is ready to run the tftp command

    open another command window
put in your tftp command, but don't hit enter yet

    =============================
    Download http://tftpd32.jounin.net/
    run as administrator.

Configure the server setting the dir of the location of your
    dd-wrt.v24-micro_generic.bin

    setup the ip to 192.168.1.1
    ===============================

switch on the router wait for the response from the ping -t command
once connection happends hit enter in the tftp window.

Let me know if it works,
    Cheers
    Ted

You have me a bit confused fr..
I can not get the tftp service enabled on my windows settings, I've tried redownloading some windows updates and repairs & the box still shows up empty so does not seem like i can tftp command in command prompt from this computer..
So by using that program can I use that to tftp? I can't see the linksys ip in the drop down box on that program?

    Hi Lenny,

    Sorry if I confused you.
    here is a good article.

    http://blog.rim3y.net/?p=1492

    Hope this explains it better.

I used tftpd32.exe to put the files to the router using the Client tab.

If you are still stuck let me know and I'll replicate it here and send on some documentation

    Thanks
    Ted

Just so you are aware, due to the 54GS V7 only having 2MB ROM, the version of DD-WRT will be somewhat crippled. Still better than the standard firmware mind you.

Standard versions require 4MB ROM, and the Mega versions require 8MB.
