It's October now since I had the cross linking on my left eye. Thankfully they let me wear soft lens in my good right eye and what a difference comfort wise that it. Even the rigid left one is now better fitted and never slips out or causes itchy red eyes.

Went to Old Trafford last week and really noticed how good my vision now is. AT matches before I would squint and generally feel like I was watching the game on a fuzzy telly.

Not using any lenses. Claire is very surprised that the CK and CXL has improved my vision this much.

I didnt qualify for laser as my cornea is too thin. Dr Cummings just said no to that from the word go. The improvement is due to the CK which reshapes the cornea. As that was taking place i could see the improvment while going out to the other room for new mappings to be taken.

Its great alright. My left eye was very bad and I had that done last november. So i was happy to get the right one done as soon as possible.

Hopefully yours will sort itself out.

I did find the procedure tough going though.

Hello there, new here and only recently got diagnosed with Keratoconus about 3 weeks ago.

Went into Specsavers cause of the 15 euro eye test and got sent to Dr Condon afterwards. According to him I've about 10% vision left in my right eye but its only barely starting to take effect in my left eye. He also got in contact with the Mater for me and I'm just waiting to hear back from them to see where i go from here. Have to say, Condon is a pretty great guy, very glad he is here in Waterford.

So since this is all very new to me i have a few questions I'm hoping some of you fine people can help me with

I'm 22 so what i can expect in the years to come?

Like many in Waterford I'm unemployed and on a medical card, will i be covered on the card for treatments? and if not what expenses will come up?

Crosslinking seems to be what I'll need next so whats it like?

And how am i gonna manage getting all these things done to my eyes when i can barely put in the drops without squirming like a freak haha

Thanks for any help you can offer :)

    Hi CB,

Your story is almost identical to mine.
I was about 21 when diagnosed, right eye was shot and had very little useful vision in it. I went straight for graft at the time, just a decision I took myself. That was in 2005. I still have that graft, I had two further corrective surgeries in it in 2012 to release some stretching pressure that was stopping a contact lens from sitting on it (Imagine the contact lens has to sit on a nice round cornea and your isn't round) and since then, the lens I use is called Synergise or Synergeyes or something like that. Its hard and soft in differenth places. Works a treat, use it for hurling and can see pretty much perfect.

My left eye has been getting a little dodgy but at a very slow pace.
I seen William Power in blackrock privately last year and he said there was no need to any treatment on left eye and possibly may never need it as KC generally stops by mid thirties anyway so hopefully that will hold true.

Some points to note from experience.
Because you, like me, have it bad in one eye and not in the other, you are going to gradually notice poor depth perception. If you play sports then this will bother you as the ball may be travelling faster than you perceive or may be slightly at a different distance or angle than you are imagining. If you get some lenses in, it will fix this but after years of managing and adjusting, you will start to feel dizzy :-0

Read some of these facts here:
    http://www.scribd.com/doc/91315/7-Vital-Facts-About-Keratoconus-Treatment

Most importantly, you won't go blind, it shouldn't deteriorate forever and technology is advancing all the time. There are already lots of treatments with more coming.

    Best of luck!

I spent an entire day in Moorfields Eye Hospital in London yesterday getting a bespoke scleral lens manufactured that might be an improvement on my current one.

A mould of my eye was taken and within 3 hours I had a perspex version which I could use to check how well it cleared the cornea. Looked like it had the perfect minimal clearance without and glaring points of contact.

Now I have to wait for a proper RGP version to be made to the same spec.

Cost of process & lens in a private lens manufacturing centre in the states: ~ £5,000.
Cost of process & lens in Moorfields with the assistance of the NHS: £54.70.

    You a UK citizen?
    Citizen, no. Resident, yes.

A big reason why I moved over here a few years ago was so that I would be within a short commute of Moorfields Eye Hospital.

The contact lens purchase scheme is just a fantastic benefit to have.

    Hi all :D

Like many here, after a simple eye examination at Spec-savers and a consultation with a specialist i was diagnosed with KC.

I have be refereed to the Wellington Eye Clinic in Sandyford.

I am 28 and have noticed the past year or so that my left eye was out of focus and my right eye is gradually getting worse also!

I drive a good bit and my work involves computers so its not a good combination for my condition. I also fly and drive a motorbike so I am hoping to have this sorted as soon as I can.

Has anyone any experience of the above clinic?

    Thanks

    Welcome KwackerJack

I was just up there yesterday for my 6 month left cxl check up and 1 month right cxl check up. All going well and meeting Claire in July for my contact fitting.

Dr Cummings is excellent. I had CK and CXL on both eyes and it has made a massive difference. The only problem i have is everything is so bright but i can live with that

Is the brightness a side affect or is that how the eye should be??

What is the approx cost for each eye? I understand it differs from patient to patient patient!

I am going to book a consultation soon then try get time off work :/

The brightness is as expected, the glare would be a side effect of KC.

it cost roughly 2500 per eye. Aviva cover some of the cost of the CXL part, the only insurer in Ireland to do so.

I was off work a week after each eye. The 2 procedures were done within 24 hours of eachother.

Hey, I have limited experience with Dr. Cummings or Dr. Corker as I had CXL done in my right eye publicly before going to see them and so was referred to Clare immediately.

I can't praise her enough for her treatment and attention to detail. If you do end up with her for lenses you won't be disappointed.

Going to see Claire first week in July. Hopefully i can get away with the soft contacts.

Looks like its time to start saving, 1500 minimum per eye is expensive but its my eyesight so its worth it :)
