[Atheists] When was the last time you 'prayed' as an atheist?

I have started praying to Joe Pesci having taken advice on the matter.

Never. It's doesn't even come into my mind as a 'hail Mary' option ( :pac: ) in the worst of times.

    Pray to what?????
If you say a quick prayer "just in case" then you're not really an a-theist are you (I think).

Every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights, just before I tick the Quick Pic on the Lotto.

To be perfectly honest, as a boy praying to Mary or St. Anthony, I did get more of a response ... I did get to see most of my favourite films in the cinema ~ remember no TV way back when I was a boy.

As a confirmed atheist, praying to the God of nothing for the lotto numbers, well I guess he has really answered me after all, I never win anything.

I'm talking myself out of a Lotto win here, somehow!? :)

Allways look on the bright side of life:D:D:D

You'd want to be pretty brave to disobey Carlin though wouldn't you. ;)

I still find myself saying things like "Please god" or "with the help of god". For me, if I were to stop and think about it, both translate as "hopefully". Which I know makes no difference to my chances, but I think 'hope' is hardwired into our brains, and maybe that's a good thing. I don't hope there is a god, I know there isn't. I do hope each time I have a little gamble though, and that adds a little fun! If I only considered the mathematical aspect of gambling then I'd never play, and it'd be no fun. In one sense it's irrational, in another it isn't.

    What about when someone sneezes?

Bless You! I know ... an abbreviation of "God bless you"

Scars of a religious upbringing, that, to be perfectly honest, I wouldn't mind keeping.

I've said to myself "Please let this happen" but I've never thought of it as asking "The universe"\"god" to let it happen..

But who are you pleading to?

You didn't fully read the OP before you dived in to answer did you? I hate when people do that because that's when they go off on tangents like the one you just did...
Well, that was my second reply on this thread - almost an addendum to my first reply (pg 1), which dealt with the OP's question more directly. I'm guessing you haven't read the whole thread. I hate when people do that because that's when they go off on tangents like the one you just did... :p

Ye Hypocrites, are these your pranks
To murder men and gie God thanks?
Desist for shame, proceed no further
God won't accept your thanks for murder.

He is the OP - that's how closely you read the thread. :p

Sometimes I would say something like 'Please God' for whatever reason but I feel like I have to always add '......whom I don't believe in by the way'

A relative who was terminally ill asked me to pray for him, probably testing my lack of belief. I told him I would and that no doubt when I got on the blower the angels would be running around wetting themselves. It gave him and his family a good laugh, and maybe some comfort.
So I said something along the lines of 'if there is any force that controls things and can pick up on human aspirations, can you help this guy?'
I feel I did the right thing and it was no skin off my atheist nose.
Needless to say it didn't alter the inevitable conclusion.

I do get these "Oh, please, don't let me be late for the bus again" moments, but they tend to be directed towards the univers in general, I find.
