Might as well get it started seen as it's up next. I earmarked 75 minutes for my 10 mile time at the start of the year but despite a bad few months and a May where I barely trained, my two legs of the Cork relay made that goal look a bit soft. However, I'm a wus, so I'm sticking with 74:59. :D

I've slept on it and remembered that I'm too much of a wus to make crazy goals like that. :)

Leeds should be top of the championship by then so that sould inspire you to make the extra effort. Btw congrats on 4000 posts.

Currently looking for sub 59, but all depends on how much training I can do over the next few weeks with work commitments.

Do we really have to call times already?! If you asked me before today would have said sub-80, but based on the strong 5 mile (after adding the extra distance) today I'll going to bring the target down to sub-78... Why not be ambitious :)

Any word on the course? I don't fancy going up the same hills as today twice like we did in this race last year. The half marathon route last year was so much better.

First ten mile race, so a bit of a guess. MacMillan has me at about 83 based on yesterday's run - I'd take that, but anything under 85 would be great

Same as Ray, first 10 mile race, and the closest I've got to that distance in training ever (so far of course!) is 7.5mi
so at this point I'm going for 10 min miles and hoping I can finish.

Tough on to call. I went through 10 miles in Enniscorthy HM in 74 minutes, so I should be a good bit faster than than given the course is flatter. That said I will just be back from a two week hliday with little running so i will probably be a lttle rusty, I'll stick my neck out and go for sub 73.

We'll go for about 10 minutes faster than my attempt at this last year while recovering from injury. If my training had been better up to now, I'd be contemplating an 82-85, but meh.

That course is such an improvement on the two laps of the 5-mile last year. Barely an incline for the first 6 and a bit miles (there's a little, but nothing that merits any mention), before the same two hills as yesterday which are both manageable. PBs all round :)

I ran the 4.9 miles in 34:36 on Saturday morning. If doubling the distance was a simple matter of running for twice the length of time, I'd be hoping to cross the line in under 70 minutes.
But I don't think I can keep up that pace over ten miles. I ran fast for the first two miles and kept pushing hard up the hills - I passed plenty of strong runners towards the end of the climb. But by mile four I was beat. It was pretty diffucult to watch, powerless, as those same runners overtook me on the way down. The guy in the grey top with the greying ponytail was the worst. I thought he was well behind me.

daymobrew's "adjuster" gives me 29:22 for yesterday, and banging that into McMillan gives 61:41, so this is a tunguska "balls on the chopping block" moment. Thankfully the course is a little easier, and it's 5 weeks away...

My first 10 miler as well. Have never run further than 10K but my long run next weekend will be over 7 miles. Did the 5 mile* in 42:53.

Would it be realistic to complete in sub 90 if I have never run that far before?

My 10k time is 54 mins and my half marathon time was just under 2:05 hours. I wonder would 90 minutes for the 10 miles be realistic and or achievable... I'll say 90 for now and i'll reassess after my 10 mile LSR this weekend.

Mister Adam, double your 5 mile time and add 2 mins is a good rough guide.

Well, allowing for the short course, your method puts me at 72:30. I'd be very pleased with that.
We'll see how training goes and hopefully I can loose a bit of weight. Unfortunately, I've been getting free indian food every day for the past three weeks. It's like I'm dragging a big sack of fat around with me.

    Folks

Not sure if I will be able for this.......
41.01 for the "5 mile" on Saturday.
5 is the furthest I've ever run though. I'd be happy that I'd get 10k tomorrow if I had to.
Is there enough time to get to 10miles safely? My problem is that I can't commit reliably to do 4 or 5 times a week running and especially doing an hour at a time..
I'd have no problem doing an hour on a Sat and a Sun and can do 30 min twice during the week,
Also wonder will the legs/knees be able for it....

Hmmm, I haven't done a tap of running since my marathon in April. I could be tempted to do this one to get my fitness back. Though its only 10 days before my exams so I'll have to see if its worth giving up a day of study so close to the exams.

Also how can we be so certain that they aren't going to make a balls of the measurement for this course like they did for the 5 Mile?

What time should I target if I do it? I've never done a 10 Mile race. 10k PB of 45:32. Half Marathon PB of 1hr 49:06

Keep the long runs for the weekends, no problem with doing shorter stuff during the week. One of the weekend runs should be about 45 - 60 mins, build the other up by a mile a week (so 6 this Sunday) and make it slow so you'll be up to running about 90 minutes on your longest run each week. You mightn't have covered 10 miles before the race day, but don't go out too fast and you should be able to get around... Go for it!

I'm all caught up in this now:D
Post run high from Saturday hasn't gone away yet so I may sign up tomorrow, am going to sleep on though.
6 this weekend would be fine, 7 the week after and so on would see me to 9 on the week before, I'd probably squeeze an extra long run in somewhere to have run 10 once beforehand

daymobrew's "adjuster" gives me 29:22 for yesterday, and banging that into McMillan gives 61:41, so this is a tunguska "balls on the chopping block" moment. Thankfully the course is a little easier, and it's 5 weeks away...

I think its definitley on. Dont want to jinx you but I reckon you'll go sub 60 with a bit to spare. Cant remember the course from last year exactly but Im pretty sure we had to go through the hills twice???? So if thats the case it'll be easier this year. Still tough enough though, hitting military hill at 6 miles to make for a hard finish. Be well worth us doing a fairly fast recce run or two before the day.

I'm a LOT slower - made it around in just under an hour on Saturday (first 5 mile, longest run so far) - do you reckon this is doable for someone like me? I'm happy enough to forgo it and focus on just getting a bit better if I'm going to be biting off more than I can chew with the 10 miles.

Go for it, i find that just running on your own with out a real goal as such can be very boring.
But the great thing about the adidas series is that it gives you a marker to aim for each month from July to september.
I find i get focused on what i have to do to finish the race, and its a great personal challange. I'm never goign to finish in the top 100 (or 3000) to be honest, but its all about having that little personal challenge and goal for myself.
and it gets me away from the kids for half a day too, but tell no-one i said that .. . .

Speed isn't the important thing, as long as you're committed to putting in some work over the next 4-5 weeks then you should have no problems. As I mentioned for the other poster, try upping the distance on your longest run each week by 1 mile - no more - and see how you get on. If you can get to a long run of about 90 minutes before the 10 miler then I don't see any reason why you shouldn't do it.

Also, if it helps, try a run-walk strategy, something like 5 mins running, 1-2 mins walking, repeated to the end of the run. The big thing is about completing the distance, not killing yourself to get under a certain time...

IMO, 10 miles is a very manageable distance for anyone who completed the 5 mile race as long as they put in some decent training of work. Distances higher than this start being about the mental struggle as much as the physical, which requires a bit more work. If you're not sure about the 10, sign up and give it a go, there's no problem with walking some of it and it's great to have a goal to aim for!
