TBH Seaneh, I think there are wayyy more people affected by the issue & just don't know what happened to their laptops.

I think if all those affcted did come forward, it would be a total clusterf*ck for HP

yeah, people are just ignorant to the issue. like they just assume its meant to get that hot or something.

I cant understand Angels standpoint on this, seems like something is amiss with her knowledge of HP 'having dealt with the issue' eventhough she said it was a load of crap initially.

Anyways, people just assume that the machine is running properly when it gets so hot & when (& yes overheating can cause programs to stop responding - not directly but as a residual effect) the laptop is slow or freezing they are told 'spyware' or 'virus'.

As far as the issue with HP not having sufficient heatsink and fan assembly's for the affected mahines - it's a documented fact that a design flaw is a contributing factor in the failure of said laptops

HP(compaq) with the nvidia chip have seen many many issues.

nVidia have admitted the issue as have Dell & a few othe partners but not HP(Compaq)

You may want to check out www.hplies.com or www.nvidiadefect.com & check if your models are listed....may even have been recalled!

Looks like a really good notebook.

    i5 processor :) & plenty of ram/hdd etc.....

A lot of the students in my class last year had Toshiba notebooks & thought they were very good. (Computing studies so running dual OS's & VMWare etc, etc)

In my opinion, well worth it

OP I wouldnt touch hp full stop.
I own a pavillion DV9720 not working just out of warranty and I am forced to go down the small claims court because the retailer will not repair for free.
I also owned a hp iq touchscreen, expensive piece of gear after 13 months went faulty (lvds cable needed to be replaced) initially retailer didn't want to know, but after I spoke to the manager agreed to repair free of charge only after mentioning I would go to the scc, my only regret I didn't buy my notebook from the same company.
My brother owns a toshiba 3 years no problems.

You wouldn't want a repair anyway. I've been through it with HP.. they offered a free repair eventually but wouldnt give me any info on parts used or give me a guarantee in writing that the repair would be free from the defect.

    No thank you siree.

    http://consumerist.com/2010/08/hp-wont-repair-my-out-of-warranty-laptop----do-i-fight-or-bail.html

Even when this customer got theirs fixed in warranty, it broke down in the 3rd year.

Mine being in the 3rd year in the same conditions I havent seen it yet, but no I wouldn't buy from HP thinking I was only going to get at best 1-3 years of Absolute Use out of it. I mean, I recently replaced it with a new desktop PC build, but I can still use the thing. To think it will explode in a month would piss me off.

Give any of these other companies a chance. Dell and HP for example churn out a lot of shyte because they operate in such overwhelming volume. Toshiba is more of a Sam Adams of laptops.

    http://consumerist.com/2010/08/hp-is-happy-to-fix-my-computer-for-free-after-i-took-them-to-small-claims-court.html
Do you have a defective computer that the manufacturer refuses to repair? Emmanuel has some advice for you: take 'em to court. Facing a constantly rebooting laptop, he tells Consumerist that HP was only willing to fix it if he paid a $225 fee. Unsatisfied with this solution, he filed in small claims court, and the company offered to fix it for free. As long as he drops the case.

I took HP to small claims court, and HP now wants to fix a laptop for free. Here is whats up, I got a HP DV6208NR laptop a couple of years ago from Best Buy. The wireless signal was having some issues but I didn't think much of it. Then one day all of a sudden the screen wont turn on, and the computer restarts itself non stop. I did some research and found out that many if not most owners of the laptop have the same issues. So I found a link on HP's own website describing the symptoms my laptop was having. I call up HP saying I want my laptop fixed and they told me no, I can however pay a discount rate of $225 to fix it. I told them no, your laptop broke because of the parts HP used not from me breaking it.
After filing in small claims court, about a week goes by and HP legal team gives me a call. HP would like to fix my laptop for Free if I drop the case.....which I will do once my laptop is fixed.

Tip to your readers, fight them in court.
If you have an impossible consumer issue, consider taking the company to small claims court. Here's how.
Suing Big Companies In Small Claims Court Is Fun And Easy
