Gooseberry bushes leaves stripped/eaten???

I have a gooseberry bush planted beside some blackcurrants and had a smashing harvest of blackcurrants, but the gooseberry bush is stripped to the bare branches and no fruits at all. When picking the blackcurrants there were some red spidermites present, could this be the problem? Whats the cause? /what treatment is needed.
