    Hi Guys

Im in the process of trying to decide weather to go with the following:
Post and rail fencing and plant no hedge.
Post and wire fence and plant hedge.

How much would it cost to plant a hedge for 230m of fencing and what type of hedge would you plant?

This is to surround our house.

Assuming you are located in a rural area, you should at least install a formal Boundary. Post & Rail is relatively inexpensive but at least defines the site. Post and wire is less expensive and would be a cheaper alternative.

When it comes to which hedge to plant, you've plenty of choice, but perhaps your level of preparedness to regularly cut and maintain will influence eventual choice? Or do you prefer to plant an informal hedge? If so what is your preferred height and depth? Finally, is it a very exposed site and buffered regularly by prevailing/cross winds?

If I do install post and rail fencing I wont be planting hedging, the approx cost for post and rail (just materials) is 1800.

Yep its a rural area, we get pretty hammered by westerly winds, dont mind maintaining it once its not every week, want something full that fits in with the garden (not farm hedging etc)

    Cheers

After you install the fencing, spray a 1 metre wide margin inside boundary. Rotovate the margin to a depth of 300mm and come late October plant Hedging whips (Laurel, Beech, Hornbeam etc) every 300mm. Simply make plant hole and heel in. You can get whips for < € 0.50/whip.

Check regularly to ensure whips remain firm in position and remove any grass.

Expect some losses due to wind, rabbits etc, hence planting rate of 3+/m.
