    As above, work seems to use '->' all the time (I'm new to PHP). Is this the same as a '.' in Java?

    yes,

    -> is the same as the '.'(dot) operator in java
    as in
    Java: object.method(params) or object.attribute
    is
    PHP: object->method(params) or object->attribute

    also '.' is the concatenation operator in PHP not '+' like in many other languages.
