Very messy race and Satanic Beat was given no chance with no run for two furlongs. Will be backing him next time.

    And the reasoning...

    I like three a lot.

    York 3.05

    Nationalism 2pts @ 8/1 StanJames

Nationalism had the beating of Dux Scholar at Windsor last time. I think Nationalism was thrown in too deep too quickly in last years Cambridgeshire and lost his way. He's been gelded since and his form this season warrants a better mark than he has and the ease in the ground will hold no fears for him. He goes through gaps and battles well. Looks a decent bet if you consider the possible reasons for his poor efforts last year. Fanunalter is up 9lbs off the back of his win on Nationalisms return and the Windsor race is standing up strongly too. He's coming off the back of a very good win, like Dux Scholar, and improvement is expected.

    York 2.00

    Classic Vintage 2.5pts ew @ 28/1 StanJames

Classic Vintage is a bit difficult and doesn't seem to have much in hand. He ran in the Melrose when beaten by Akmal two years ago and faded in the final two furlongs (14f race) off a mark of 97. He goes well enough with cut, running blinders twice at Doncaster against Salden Licht and then in the November Handicap against Times Up. He's a pound higher than his last winning mark, and I think the key to him is a flat galloping track. He's won at Goodwood yes and seems to like it but in a big field on easy ground a flat galloping track seems best. Doncaster, Haydock, York....

    York 3.40

    Hamish McGonagall 4pts ew @ 40/1 StanJames

Hamish McGonagall loves York. He also loves cut in the ground. He's won 3 times at York and placed 3 more times. He's never won past 5f and 3 of his York defeats have come at 6f. He's won 3 times and second once from 8 starts on GS. He really goes on any ground and his recent form is excellent in terms of this races. How he is 40/1 is way beyond me. The horses who've beaten him recently are well lower in the betting. He was beaten a quater of a length by Masamah last time over course and distance and that one is 15/2 versus Hamish at 40/1.

Nationalism was never travelling and on course drift tells a story of its own.
