Portlaoise Question

Slightly bizarre question here - myself and the fella are heading to Portlaoise for a day (for complicated reasons), and I've been promised a picnic if I can find any kind of open public area/field/park/whatever in which to have it. Google and its Maps, though, are proving kinda useless, and my own knowledge of Portlaoise is limited to driving through it, so I'm kinda stuck - is there anywhere like that within easily reachable distance of the town? Any suggestions that anyone might have would be really appreciated!

Unfortunately those gates are now welded shut and the beautiful Gazebos to the right and left of the pic are now demolised! So to list open air spots for a picnic I'd say in no particular order;
1. The Town Park on the New Road,
2. The Civic Plaza, bit of cover there too if it decides to rain
3. Fitzmaurice Place under the graffitied wing of Col. Fitmaurice's Plane
4. Park off of Green Mill Lane near the railwayline
or 5. xp90's idea and ask the guv for a visitors pass ;-)

head to the glenbarrow waterfall park in the sliebh bloom. its about 15-20 min drive form portlaoise and an amzing place

Cool, all look solid (well, except maybe #5 ), cheers man! Tbh, any answer that isn't "the prison" or "ye're ****ed, there's nowhere" is more than I was hoping for.

Appreciate the suggestion, but sadly we're bussing it (very little money = no car) so dunno how doable that'd be

It is down by the Convent. If you are at the cinema and go down that road, you will past the C.B.S on your left. Fitzmaurice Place is on your right shortly after that, just before The Company hair salon. Really, you aren't missing anything! :pac:
