Saying someone isn't a genius isn't an insult so calm down pampers.

I just don't see how genius is in anyway an appropriate term to describe someone who was given a chance at a good life but instead pissed it up a wall.

We really do give sports stars too much credit.

Of what relevance is it whether I have or haven't? My point is, you don't have to be an expert in something to have an opinion on it. E.g. I'm guessing you're not an actor/film-maker yet you've criticised films...

It's not possible to be a genius at snooker. While it might be strategic compared to most sports it's not very deepc ompared to chess.

Since being good at snooker depends more on a natural ability to use a cue and not your brain I don't see how anyone in snooker is a genius.

It's just sports fans trying to make playing games seem more important than it is.

    RIP Alex Higgins.

Pretty sure it's considered (and named) the bereavement forum, not a condolences forum.

AFAIK it's for people suffering bereavement related issues not for people who want to show a mark of respect to a celebrity. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

There was an RIP/Condolences forum approved as well but there's no sign of it being set up.

THE MAN WAS A GENIUS AT SNOOKER. END OFF.

Anyone who plays/likes/follows snooker will say the same so give over and take your pedantic nonsense somewhere else.

It never ceases to amaze me how every thread, no matter the subject, develops in to an argument of some discription.

In snooker terms the man was widely regarded as a genius, a precursor to O'sullivan.

And snooker doesn't rely on your brain.? Try starting a thread on that one in the snooker forum.

That's not what I'm doing. If they were claiming he was batman and I told them different would that be trolling? Saying he's a genius is around the same level of absurdity.

He was good a player, he may or may not have been a nice guy but he was definitely not a genius and he wasn't Irish none of us would care.

There is one skill that is often overlooked in snooker which is choice of shot.

I can see how they thought he was gifted for picking out some of these. I can also see how they thought he was a madman for picking some of the ones he didn't get.

But the ones he did? Er..."snooker genius". Abbreviation: "genius".

Some people would start an argument about anything.

I don't remember Higgins playing but without him Snooker would have never made it as a TV sport. His match with Jimmy White in the 1982 World Semi Final had some unreal pots, stuff you wouldn't even see today.

Snooker isn't a very deep strategical game. It may seem like it is to sports fans but it is very easily solved what the best solution is at any given time. So even if he picked the best shot every time it simply isn't an intensive enough task to deserve to be called a genius.

"Alex Higgins", genius - google search results = 3370 3410 (and rising)

More than you'll get for your genius opinions on the skillset of snooker.

It was a TV sport for decades by the time Alex came along?

It was even broadcast in black and white as nonsensical as that sounds.

It doesn't take a genius to figure that out and then do it!

I wasn't going to bother replying to your posts as I thought the video I posted would be enough to shut you up.

Here is the Oxford English Dictionary definition of 'Genius' that is being applied in the context of this thread:

"..an exceptionally intelligent person or one with exceptional skill in a particular area of activity.."

Batman was a fictional character so no you wouldn't be trolling.

Alex Higgins was a genius with the ability he had to use that cue, now if you want to argue that fact then off to the Snooker forum with you and best of luck.

Just don't do it in this thread.

I understand what you're saying, but I think you are wrong on the "If he wasn't Irish" point. OK, it might not have been posted here if he was English, but - unusually for sport - snooker fans are generally above nationality.

Rest In Peace Alex, although it seems some mindless idiots are determined to deny you in death the peace you seldom enjoyed in life.

You were a true snooker genius who almost single-handedly dragged the game you loved kicking and screaming into the modern, professional, colour-TV world it inhabits today. Thanks.

True genius with a cue. Was famed for performing unbelievable pots and snookers were on a level ahead of his peers. He could open up his play to delight the audience once a score of 65-70 had been attained that no-one could match.

    Rest under table.

    Ronnie O'Sullivan doing a 147 in 4 minutes isn't a genius?

Only got to see him play on TV near the end of his career, the late 80's. But, even then, some of the shots he took on then were unthought of. He opened up the game and made it far more entertaining and exciting than it ever was. I'd say he was 20 years ahead of his time, he was that far ahead of everybody else.

The shame of course is he only had 2 World Championships to show for it but no more of that, we all know why.

    RIP Alex.
