are they rare? that distribution list on that site doesnt exactly seem to have many?

Even the 7-spot ladybird distribution is rather sparse. Not many folks recording ladybirds. From the map, with the spread of records, it may be extrapolated that they are widespread.

    I think a beetle larva.
For larva IDs, it's often essential to know foodplant, though wouldn't help me in this case :)

I'll move this to bug thread.

Was wondering that myself , scarce this year
A lot of people were commenting on it at the Biolitz , only the 7-spot was recorded , lack of food dosent seem to be the problem.
Are they just late this year ? , would the harsh winter have any bearing on them ?.

All of my insect macro shots are in the wild using a Canon 100mm f2.8 USM Macro lens on either a Canon 40D or 7D body.
I use a Canon MR-14EX Ringflash as well unless the light is really in my favour.

I found this guy down by the Dargle near Enniskerry. I looked him up but can't remember the name of the beatle. To be honest, the beatle is ugly compared to the show this guy has on.

These are scale insects on a orchid.
    9D11A5B49AAB40AA851B35E6F30CA2E3-800.jpg

This guy here is some sort of a bird tic. It came out of a swallow's nest.

That is a Caterpillar of a Pale Tussock Moth and not any Beetle.

The "Tic" is not a Tic but some sort of Fly.

The Scale Insect seems to be Coccus hesperidium, which can cause the death of that Orchid.

    1. Correct, my mistake. A rather ugly end to a beautiful caterpillar. :)
    2. Correct. Ornithomya avicularia.
    3. Correct. Treated, and is now flowering and scale-free.

The "tick" is a flightless louse-fly Crataerina pallida. They are found on house martins and swifts also. The give me the creeps :p
