To be very honest and meaning no disrespect to the S&S Forum (which I regularly read and think is a great resource on the site), but we really do have bigger issues to look at which is why it's review hasn't happened yet. It will happen though.

This 'think of the children reason' for not having the S&S forum available to non-subscribers is ridiculous.

I don't necessarily disagree with your post, but I don't think it's a ridiculous notion that boards would have it's own standards about what it allows and what it doesn't.

To use your own argument, hard-core pornography and videos showing extreme violence are available on the internet, so it's ridiculous not to allow them on boards - that's patently a ridiculous argument :)

however, I also think that the fear of having this discussed in the news media as being a viable motivation for not allowing it is ridiculous.

    That's a policy I agree with.
all it takes is one Sunday world article and the whole country would be up in arms.

The issue of sex and the internet is still a very new concept, and to have an Irish site openly talking about sex is something that is still abhorrent to Joe Duffy's audience.

As much as we would like to openly discuss our favourite positions, or which method of contraception suits a certain individual, we have to remember that the most vocal people tend to be the most sexually repressed (and probably have no children of their own).

I had started my own response to this topic, but Terry has summarised my view in a far more eloquent manner than I ever could.
For god sake they are mere words on a forum, completely harmless

Not in the eyes of your typical lowlife tabloid journalist, looking to stir up a bit of controversy. Especially one or two who have been banned from the site and have a grudge to bear.

Perhaps remove the restriction on non-subscribers, but I think it should still remain a private forum.

Set up something similar to TLL private forum. If the mods don't know your real age & motives on the site then you have to take a photo of yourself holding a card with your username and saying "I want access to S&S." Accompany it with a pic of some form of ID and you're sorted.

Throw in another mod or two to deal with the extra posters and Bob's your uncle.

It's ridiculous alright but it wasn't my argument. I never said anything like 'if such and such filth is available elsewhere why not allow on boards.ie?' I made the point that why would a young person who is on the net looking for a sex related thrill go looking at a messageboard like boards.ie? They are obviously going to go check out some pics/videos on a porn site.

Eh, boards.ie already has tons of threads on sex, and there have also been tons of threads on illegal drugs where people flat out admitted taking them. Not one story/news report about it though. Because it would have to be an extremely slow weak for news before a complete non-issue such as people talking about sex or talking about taking some hash/cocaine on an internet forum makes it into the papers.

Is it a joke? That procedure IS in place for the LL private forum isn't it?

Check his highlighted bit. TLL don't ask for I.D. :D I think this whole sex change fiasco in AH is just so some members can legally be female and get in to the private forum for TLL. Plus the cheaper car insurance and bewbs :pac:

Ive very rarely read the S&S forum and I dont know if i ever posted there. But do people really want it to be public?

In my view its got nothing to do with "think of the children" and everything to do with "think of yourself". Boardsies are known in Real Life (TM) and by opening a forum such as S&S it opens the posts that you make to the public too. It could decrease the quality of posts in the forum if people know there is a risk of someone being identified. (remember not everyone who reads boards.ie are members or posters) It also risks an increase in crap, troll and "in it for the funnehs" posts.

I would be VERY hesitant in posting in it if the forum was public and if i did, i wouldnt be inputting anything to threads that was personal.

Also the media has taken a massive shine to boards.ie and the last thing im sure people want, is tabloid using boards as a scapegoat of corrupting the nations morals. (remember the tabloid crusade against The Slate publication some years ago?)

Anyone can get access for the price of 1 month sub which is a fiver.
So it is not private but restricted access, always has been.

This comes up every now and then, there is not the function to do so but there are work around, like posting anon in PI/RI and requesting it be moved to S&S or pming one of the posts who will quote and post on someone's behalf.
