Is this realistic. Can a band without any record company or airplay on radio make it into the Irish Top 10?
There's a band from my town who are making a big social media drive to try and achieve this. They say some weeks, 500 sales is good enough to get into the top 20!

If they are good enough people will buy songs that they produce

    Funny, but sadly not true...

@OP: David O'Doherty tried this once with a track called 'Orange' - made it into the top 30 in Ireland. When he tried it, 300 were produced - figures required to enter Top 30 may have changed since.

If they're going for a social media approach, people won't buy it cause it's already there presented to them on their laptop.
If they do plenty of gigs, people will buy it.

The short answer is it's becoming MORE possible, but it's not very easy or likely and won't be for a while...

Even if they do, they will still need the help of the "industry" to distribute their music to shops and book tours and run publicity...

It's a nice dream, but for now, it's just a dream for 99.9999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999% of artists.

Interesting about David O'Doherty and Koopa. I guess playing live gigs is the best way to getting a loyal fan base, but if they can be successful making a push for the charts through facebook, then they might get some airplay. And yes it's all well and good having these ideas, but you do have to generate good material as well! Here is their facebook link... what do ye think of their music... good enough?

Yes. It is. We got to 15 and were virtually unknown.

We marketed it like maniacs, gigged like we were posessed, made sure it was available nationwide in all the big stores. And we still could have sold more.

If you're willing to work hard, then it is possible - I won't say it'll happen for sure and it's definitely a massive leap from top20 to top10. The competition is always going to be more well known but never say never.

Hey it is possible, we entered official chart 4 weeks ago at 24 and that was 560 downloads....then moved to 30 2nd week and then 41 then 63 and have no idea as im not looking this week :D but we had double that in sales in 1st week as we had download issues which if they had counted would of put us at 12-11 in chart :( to get top 10 on average your looking at 1200 ish....

remember sales are reset each week you dont carry any over like the myth of 50% etc.. so even getting 30 2nd week was 350 ish?!?

Make sure you have a fan base (not myspace friends) real fans.... and remember although they all like you they wont always buy :)

if they follow you for years and you know them really well they tend to expect things for free :D

it helps to be gigging 6-7 nights a week too... and the hardest thing you will find is placing the song with radio stations etc.. you need a special key to get into the big ones :D

    Good luck
