In this day and age what % of people do you reckon have javascript disabled or blocked? I reckon the vast vast majority don't even know what it is let alone want to disable it. With some of the biggest sites on the net, such as youtube or hotmail, unusable without javascript is their much need these days to design & develop your sites so they decay gracefully when javascript is disabled? I kind of feel like these days it's tough titty for the end user and if he/she is in the 1% who wants to disable javascript well they can take a hike, and it would certainly make things easier on the developer not having to cater for these people.

But what is the general consensus, do you reckon it is still best practise to cater for the non-javascript demographic?

Surprisingly, the last stats that w3schools have are from 2008, when they had it at 5%

The problem with generalised statistics, though, is that they may not reflect any specialised audiences.

In general, I'd make sure something displayed, and avoid anything like navigation that depended on JavaScript; otherwise you're going to register zero in SEO.

But as for functionality, well, using JavaScript is far more acceptable to using Flash, and unless they want a text-only page, a functional interactive website isn't possible without some JavaScript.

I have to say I've been surfing the web about 15 years now and I haven't suffered any ill-effects from, or encountered, any noteworthy malicious JavaScript. Regarding the loss of speed, I'm more than happy to lose the 5 seconds or so the JavaScript adds per site visit so I can experience the page as the designer/developer intended.

OP - I wouldn't bother catering for them, it's their decision to drop out of the web experience you designed for them. Just make sure the page has basic functionality without JavaScript, you should be doing this from an accessibility and SEO pov anyway.
