Being a Pilot myself it's beyond me why one would want to spend their days pushing tin, the salary is unbelievably juicy though.

ATControllers have one of the highest suicide rates in the world.

Good luck to all going for it.

Pilots are the first to die in a crash.

Theres a multistory one right next to it. If that closes early (doubt it does) Get a parking disk and park up O' Curry street and walk down.

    -Unbelievably juicy salary
-nice work environment where you work with all different types of people
-employed by the state and not being at the hands of big companies/airliners
-not staying in hotels half your life
-not having to invest 1000s into your training without even knowing if you can get a job, and not having to continue that investment for more types/keeping yourself current ,etc .

Theyre two completely different types of jobs.

You will have to pay the IAA €50000 back for your initial training.I think its over 5 years.

Oh I totally agree, i.e totally different jobs. I'm not picking a fight, if my initial post comes across that way that wasn't the aim, nor to start a War over the whole thing.

I was simply stating a fact, huge pressure in say JFK or London.

I personally prefer my line of work, I'm sure you prefer yours.

There is however a payback scheme, 40 odd k I think.

I don't think anyone other than the IAA would know that number, so you'd have to ask them.

Maybe I got hit with the ' Stupid Stick ' but I presumed ALL applicants who met the educational requirements were invited to the initial test

I thought the same , until i hear of people that werent called then i will stick with that assumption, they couldnt of properly evaluated all those forms in such a short time, especially with all this talk of loads coming in on last day of deadline.

How do you know there's a pilot in the room, because he tells you ;)

If there's one thing ATC aint, it's boring. It's obvious you've never set foot in an ATC centre in your life.

Best of luck to all who apply.

I got called but a buddy of mine didn't. Unless he hears in the morning.

I've been in quite a few Towers, (drop the Ivory in why don't you Blade Slapper) in many countries, anyone in the aviation scene knows a box of beer to the Tin Pushers is worth it's weight in Gold.

The boring comment was just a flip of the bird, to that bird over her comment. I didn't realise the post she replied to might have sound condescending, as it wasn't meant to in the first place.

The 3rd of September. What a wholly inconvenient date for me. What you all think the chances of being able to change it are?

I think you would need to provide a compelling reason such as travel , appointment ,etc and be able to supply documentary evidence in support.

It says at the bottom of the email dress code is "smart casual" which suggests a shirt/jumper and pants but not a suit. Unless somebody can correct me?

Hi all I've been asked to the tests on the 8th in Limerick too
Wondering: I have been tested for red/green color blindness and was confirmed with very mild form. Its effectively unidentifiable in every day life but none the less will this rule me out if I managed to get further in the process? i.e. The IAA Medical?
    your comments appreciated!

best option would just be to email them and ask them .

Or google the colour blindness requirements for a Class 3 medical.

It WILL be picked up in the medical IF you get that far, it shouldn't prevent you getting the job if no other issues worse than it are discovered.

If you're asked about any known medical issue's don't lie tell the truth if they find out later you knew it could be enough to bin you.

    +1 if the don't ask don't tell.

The standard Ishihara test is used to detect colourblindness in the medical. This is the one with a number, depicted by a series of coloured dots, contained within a circle depicted by yet more dots of a contrasting colour.
Google it and have a look. If you cant pass that, you wont get past the medical.
Colourblindness is a major problem for anyone using our system, as all of the labels on the flights can display a wide array of colours, which each have their own relevance.
Unfortunately for some, there is no chance of anyone being issued a medical cert, if they have colourblindness.
In general, the IAA have never had so many peolpe apply for an SCP intake, and they are being extremely selective in the candidates that they will call for the various stages of the recruitment.

If anyone wants to PM me, or address a question in the open forum, at any stage during the process, then I'm only too willing to offer any assistance that I can.

    Best of luck to all.

    Irish atco,

Do you have any idea what is the likely top percentage you would need to be in to get to stage two?

i.e. will they take 50%, 25%, 10% to stage two. I know hard to say with the numbers going but any info would be grateful.

I'm afraid that at the moment i dont have that sort of info. This is a brand new format for the competition, because of the huge volume of applications.
Working backwards, there are meant to be 24 jobs, last time about 100 were called for final interview, and about 250(??) did the computer testing.
You can imagine that there will be a huge cull of numbers after the "pen and paper", but at this stage, your guess is as good as mine, sorry.
if i get some more info i'll let you know.
    Good luck

    Sorry Irish Atco,

Mind if i ask one more? :p

The paper and pencil test - what format is it? Is it just like general test in the areas they specified, somewhat similar to tests numerical reasoning, abstract reasoning tests, etc., available on the internet?

Yes, that's my understanding. The first test will be a method by which the IAA will cull the numbers of applicants.
The second test is a new computer based one, that will be more directed towards the job of an ATCO (spatial awareness etc)
    Hope that helps!

I'm down for 11th Sept in Limerick.

I would advice that you send a reply to the email that you received accepting your initial application and enquire if they have completed processing applications.

That's what I did, they said that an email was sent to me giving me a date for the test, but I didn't receive any. It's sorted now, they resent it. I'd suggest that anybody else who didn't hear anything should contact them ASAP, they're very pleasant to deal with.
