What is good music, for you? And what are you interested in? Then we can recommend places more easily.

    Is English your first language?

Lets dont analyse me  and as you already noticed english is not my first language...
Good music for me is music produced by real artists - not record companies and unfortunately this is not very popular at the same time..
What i am interested in ... human condition :), literature, (men  ?)

    softmee,

Welcome to Galway, home of reverse snobbery ;) Anything or anyone who wants something a bit different can expect negative responses.

Galway's nightspots tend to be either traditional pubs or crowded hellholes. There's really not much else. You won't find many (if any) real café society wine bar type places. Socialising tends to be a more frenetic activity in Galway than some other places. You'll also find (and probably have already found here) that anyone who wants an alternative to a loud pub tends to be accused of being a snob.

    Good luck in your search!

So, let me get this straight... you're implying that regular patrons of common or traditional pubs are unable or too common or drunk or proletarian to intelligently talk about the human condition or literature? Is this your angle? Only this level of intellectual intercourse can be successfully entertained in a café or wine bar? Huh?

-from my experience it doesnt often happen in a place with huge plasma screen and rugby on it.. it would be like winning lotto! :)

With respect but you don't seem to have much experience of Irish pubs. Either that or you have gone in to pubs with a preconceived notion or expectation or prejudice. Try going in with an open mind and don't judge people too easily. Each seat or corner of a pub might be occupied by a whole life or worldview and just because the tellie is on with some sport (not a fan of soccer 24/7 in pubs either) doesn't mean that intelligent and stimulating intellectual discourse can't go on. Pigeon holing people or places is intellectually lazy wouldn't you agree?

-yeah, maybe you are right, but i just miss those continental cafes/bars where people are interested in each other, where they end up dancing on the tables and where you can stay untill the morning and after go for coffee with people you just meet last night.. ;)

We're not on the continent. If you went to live in a small city in, for example, France, you couldn't expect there to be a real Irish pub (not one of the tourist ones, a real one).

We don't have 24 hour opening times for bars here.

    Welcome to Ireland!

People in this thread have given her plenty of recommendations. They've tried to offer suggestions, but she's either responded with "" or not answered when we've asked for her to be more specific. I imagine the negative reactions haven't been due to her request, but to her attitude. But as her English is obviously not fluent I'm sure some of that is just mistranslation.

Maybe you can recommend somewhere for her? You seem to have similar opinions.

-what other language are you fluent at? (if any) i bet you even dont speak irish, so maybe dont be too smart. Jesus, i just asked! Is that a crime?

What? I was just giving you the benefit of the doubt. But you've kind of proved my point by misunderstanding me.

I think you need to leave your pigeon holing at home. Granted alot of the pubs are meat markets but not all.

If you want to talk about literature there is a book club which meets regurlarly and they have a thread here somewhere.

btw, i dont find anything wrong with your english!

I tend to agree with the OP, Galway is not that diverse when it come to bars/pubs. Very much of the masses or student influenced.

Most people here(forum) probably came to uni/gmit to study and never left therefore thinking it's the diversity capital of europe, compared to their home town it probably is, when in actual fact it's far from it.

For what it's worth OP I'd recommend the Crane, Kelehans,Roisin Dubh( the odd night), Bierhaus or Aras na Gael.

-thanks for comment about my english (I know its not perfect -but i am trying hard :()

Thanks anyway, maybe i will find some place i like , some day, some time...

I don't think there's anything wrong with her English, I was just saying maybe she's coming across more negatively than she means to. Agree with you on the book club, that's a good idea.

Of course it's not very diverse, it's a small city. And it is influenced by the student population because a large fraction of the population are students.

As for having a go at the people on the forum here, don't you think that's a bit judgemental?

I agree with your suggestions though, although as has been mentioned I'd recommend the Salt House, Oslo, O'Connells and The Cottage as well.

So you agree it's a judgemental thing to say then? Although I fail to see where I have been judgemental. I simply said that as her first language is English maybe we should give her the benefit of the doubt. And I figured her first language wasn't English based on my experience as an English language teacher, as I understand the difficulties and misunderstandings that can often occur with even the most talented of English learners.

This is strange, because where i come from its mostly students who make good, more intellectual and artistic kind of atmosphere... (different students here?) and its kind of funny you are sending me to the book club , when i asked for good club! lol

(dont like Britney Spears -go to library and drink tea?) LOL

No, I imagine skelliser suggested the book club because you said that you are interested in literature. He/she was simply trying to help.

Nah, my point was that the forum has generally been outraged that the OP didn't find Galway varied enough.

Btw I have no problem understanding her turn of phrase.

Apologies, the book club meets in a pub, think its bar 8, so that kills two birds for you. literature and alcohol!

They also have a poll or some democratic method of selecting books, so its not a totalitarian regime!!
Search for the thread here if your interested.
