Quick question (sorry if has been covered already) looking at the OSM map. There doesn't seem to be an alternative route that could be designated an R road at the Arklow end. Are they planning a new "side" road to allow non motorway traffic avoid the motorway or will it be remaining an N road? Hopefully they have allowed for this on the plans and it can be designated motorway.

There are no plans for an additional side road but traffic could use the R773 from Jack White's to get to the R750 to continue south to Arklow and vice versa. From Arklow traffic could take the R772 (Old N11) south to Gorey and vice versa.

I think there are plans for a 6m road for all traffic beside the new dual cariageway. The existing road will be there from where Coolmore is marked on the top of the linked map; to past the beehive, pretty much to here

This means most of the existing road will be narrowed, with hard shoulders broken up and covered in soil.

There is a huge land take fenced off at the northern end of the Arklow bypass, so I presume there will be a new access road from Coolmore to the road with the bend at Balinaskea in the bottom of the linked map

And I expect something similar at the northern end of the new scheme. In Fact I'd expect a route for general traffic to be made from the junction at the top of Rathnew Hill/Rocky road to the Beehive, to only have 2 M11's instead of the 3 we have now.

The proposed road development necessitates the realignment or crossing of a
number of Regional and Local Roads in order that they can be integrated into the
proposed local R772 all-purpose road network, and their existing junctions with
the N11 can be closed off to improve road safety. Other than the junctions
described in the previous section there will be no access provided between these
    roads and the dualled N11.

I spent hours searching for the abp case number without success.
but I was looking for an Bord Pleanala, rather than abp!

This reminds me , there was an application to close the LILOs near the rugby club. What happened to this? I think the road parallel to the N11 (west side) becomes the R772, and then
An all-purpose local access road, to be designated
as the R772, will be provided on the western side of the N11 from Ballinaskea at
the north end of Arklow Bypass to Scratenagh and the proposed overbridge

Thanks for that. I missed that when originally posted. So it looks like it could/will be designated as motorway. Makes sense.

Motorway re-designation will be up to The Minister
    (from a year ago)
Dear Mr Eejit who bothers sending correspondence to us ,

Thank you for your [latest] enquiry.
The new section of N11 will be dual carriageway and of sufficient standard to be re-designated as motorway. There are no plans for re-designation at present. The route of the new road is to the west of the Ballinameesda bends; the Coillte access will be from the existing N11 which will be re-designated as a Regional Road when the new section is opened to traffic.

A friend who's a roads engineer, told me a few weeks ago that it would be normal to try to schedule the earth moving for the summer months.
Not because of the longer evenings, but because the dryer soil will allow for faster progress than if they tried to tackle it in the spring.

Makes perfect sense. They're flying along now.

I hope they don't open it as all purpose and redesignate it a few weeks later. That would be a shocking waste of money.

This has probably been answered previously but I can't find the answer:
Will there be a toll on the new road?

I tried searching the NRA site and Googling but I didn't find a definite answer.

    Thanks.

Yes, it's important that if they're going to redesignate that they get it done a few months before the road opens so the right signs can be done up.

I would be appalled if they wasted money on short lived green signage, in this age of austerity. Surely they won't, but who knows with this country.

    Lead by example please govt.

Anyone got any new pics of the roadworks ? It's been weeks since any have been posted.
Surely there must have been some progress worth reporting ?

I'm not in Ireland often so cannot get a look.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,211 ✭✭✭BigMoose

I've not got any pictures, but in the last couple of weeks earth works do seem to have progressed between the Beehive and Barndarrig. I'll try and take some photo's next time I'm going passed and not the driver :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,695 ✭✭✭jd

I drove down last weekend, no pics. Hard to see while driving, but I think some heavy work been done on northern end. Also work near Arklow bypass, maybe for the new distributor road? There are some road graders (I think that's what they are called) on site now too.

    Similar to these yokes :)

Nice pics Josip. Are these taken from around the halfway mark ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,874 ✭✭✭✭josip

Top pic is taken from just before the Tap (I'll miss those bends)
The next one with the VW is shortly after the Barndarrig Station.
The next one is along the longer of the overtaking straights before Jack Whites, not much going on along there since it was marked out.

Next 2 are of the bridge over the RedCross river just before Scratenagh cross, DTE Timber Frames and Trusses.

The remainder are on the run up to the end of the Arklow dual carriageway bypass.

I've probably driven that road 300 times and had to refer to Google Maps for most of the above place names :(

Arklow end of bypass they have took away the ditch to reveal the old road that was used before the arklow bypass was built this will be connected to a new side road running beside the new dual carriageway when completed by looks of it

Not much happening between here and jack whites i noticed that they have laid ballast stones as if they are going to make a new roadway and divert traffic off the current road just before scratenagh cross heading south towards arklow and again after barndarrig no pics of this sorry.

    Before barndarrig

Noticed at the bends there RE-taring the main road seems a waste as in a year this will be a back road.

When is the expected completion date of this project? I thought 2016 but had read it was ahead of schedule and now late 2015 ??

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,874 ✭✭✭✭josip

This time last year they thought Autumn next year
    http://www.cisireland.com/projectdescription.aspx?id=985
but they've been coy about the completion date since the beginning of this year. 2 things are certain
    1. It will be completed before the next General Election
    2. It will be brought in "on time" and "under budget"
