Is it worth your while bringing a dog to dog training classes or do you think that a person would be able to train their dog with resources from books and the Internet?

It's well worth it. Even from a point of view of just getting your dog in a situation where he/she is comfortable around other dogs it's worth it. AND others there will help out with their own little tit bits of info.

I have training classes at my daycare and I think that its well worth it if you don't know what your doing, but if you socialise your dog a lot and really do put the time in you can do just as much at home off youtube.

Sometimes I find the classes just help people commit to putting the effort into training, especially with the homework we give out!!!!

Youtube is fab though for helping you train your dog new things.

My husky now turns on and off light switches for me after I was looking up shaping on youtube!

well the way i see it is you can learn loads from books, however classes provide great distractions and socialization. also one method doesn't work for all dogs, which is why dog trainers and behaviourists need to be able to read dogs and have experience to deal with different scenarios

    thats amazing,

I have a lab, she is a beauty!! Good recall.

I would be happy to have her heal early in her walk, (as she is very excited to start!) takes her a while to settle down!

Gonna try some extra work with her and might give the lessons a go after my hols.

I've rang a few trainers locally just to see what they offer and found they wanted to know what my specific problems were. I was looking for puppy socialization classes really but found there are none in the county and anyone I contacted only does one on one. So I'm going to get the basics down at home and then figure out if I need one to one training and definately try some agility classes to see if she likes it and for something to do

I loved taking my Jack to her classes and she loved going, she did obedience and agility and I'm hoping to get her back into agility now we're back in Ireland (if anyone knows any in south Meath or North Dublin that would be great)

Agility is brilliant once they have basic commands (sit, wait and recall) and every dog I've seen at classes and shows has a great time and they learn extra socialisation skills.

Just bear in mind that young dogs can't do much agility as their bones extra are still forming.

Good luck with it all :D
