I was just wondering if anyone has bought a phone online from America? And if so did it work just fine with an Irish sim card? Can anyone recommend a site to buy from cause some of them don't seem to ship to Ireland?

    Thanks guys

Why do you want to buy a phone online from America?

Some phones will work, some wont. It depends on the model it is, and what frequency bangs it operates on. It also needs to have no network lock in place.

The money you save (If any) will be nullified if the package gets hit by customs.

Lots of people in the US buy their phones online from Hong Kong.

    Places like this:http://uniqbe.com/default.aspx

But if it's from somewhere outside the EU, there is good chance you will have to pay customs duty and handling fees.

You might be better off trying places like http://www.amazon.co.uk or http://www.pixmania.ie first

Just remember that America is actually behind the rest of the world in some ways when it comes to mobile technology.

And you have to be careful, not all of the carriers over there use the same standards as the rest of the world. So if you buy a phone that is only for use on a US network, well, it won't be much use to you here.

And as others have said, you can be 99% certain you will get caught for Customs import duty, which will probably end up costing you more.
