Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

who is the most capped player to have played in Premier League ?
Cobi Jones, played for Coventry in 1994-95 and has 164 caps, the 6th-highest in history

Edit: Are you talking about international caps?

David James has to be the most capped if we are talking Premier League caps.

Edit: I suppose its just appearances in the PL, not caps.

Trick question, it was Wanderers in 1872 because the FA Cup is a British trophy, therefore a European one :D

I think his question was most capped player (internationally) to have played in the Premier League.

Yeah, just thinking that myself, Van Der Sar could well be the one, although could be someone from a "minor" footballing nation

Lads, caps refer to international appearences. Not sure if its still the practice or not, but players got actual an actual cap for each time they represented their country.

The word is never used for club games. Ever.

Not pedantic in the slightest, ive never heard the word "Cap" used for club appearances.

It was, it leaves it open to being a harmless mistake in the question.

The word 'international' should be in the question. Anytime I've ever hear anybody ask about international appearances in any shape you are asked about 'international caps' not caps.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,900 ✭✭✭Eire-Dearg

I've seen "caps" used for club appearances many times.

Cobi jones is right. Next one is

    1979 - Sunderland
    1981 - Villa
    1980 - ???????

Thats FA cup final winning goals i think but cant seem to remember the winner in 80 without googling.

and caps relates to international appearances as has already been explained you actually used to and im pretty sure still do receive an actual cap per appearance. anyone using it to describe league/overall club appearances is simply using it wrong.

Rubbish. Its regularly just called caps, without mention of the word international

The word caps is NEVER used for club football, and is ONLY ever used for international football, so I struggle to see how on earth its ambiguous at all
