It sometimes (often even) happens that while you're replying to a post, someone else replies and you see it when you hit send. As a workaround, I quote my own second post, copy the contents, save it, edit the first one, paste, save and edit/delete the second post.

Is there any way an option could be added to do this in one step (for normal users)?

Only if a large amount of time has passed and the poster is aware of all the previous posts. Even then it's nitpicking. If a mod really feels that strongly about users posting different consecutive posts, they can merge them themselves.

The cost in time and effort required to implement this feature far exceeds the benefit obtained, so I can't see us doing it any time in the foreseeable future.
