On Your Bike and Combine Harverster in Coachford:D

The Coachford Autumn Festival promises to be a very interesting and active one. Irelands first ever High Nelly Bicycle Run will take place on Saturday August 21st. The bicycles, some dating back from the early 1900s are a far cry from the modern racing bikes of today, with an absence of gears and the addition of a heavy frame this bicycle run is not for the faint hearted but the sp...ectacle of over 20 High Nelly’s heading off to do a six mile circular tour around the village will really be something to look forward to.

Another challenge for the participants at the festival is the Power Pull. This event usually involves teams of four pulling a truck or tractor but the organisers of the festival have decided to introduce something different as festival Chairman, Tadgh Murphy explains” because the festival takes place in the Autumn we decided to introduce a Combine Harvester to the Power Pull. The Harvester is a huge machine and looks very daunting and it should be great fun seeing how the different teams approach the challenge of pulling this monster through the village.

A festival dance takes place on Saturday night with music guaranteed for all tastes so people can look forward to dancing to the rock and modern music as well as filling the floor for the traditional madness and craic associated with the ‘Siege of Ennis’ and the ‘Walls of Limerick’.

On Sunday August 22nd the Coachford Autumn Festival continues with an over 40’s GAA match pitting the ‘Natives’ from the village against the ‘Blow-ins’. This match will be played in a light hearted manner while a t the same time both teams will be going all out to show the other which group of over 40’s are in better shape at this stage of their lives.

The festival will also have a lot of sideshows for adults and children. Bouncy Castles and face painting will be provided to keep the kids entertained while the adults will take part in some traditional games such as ‘Tug of War’ and ‘Sheaf Tossing’ throughout Sunday.

Festival Secretary, Stephen Sheehan said “ The festival is a combination of very active events such as the High Nelly run and the over 40’s match and then we have a vintage car and tractor display, an organic Farmers market and a dog fashion show. We’re hoping hat it will be two days of fun and that everyone will get involved.”
