    Hi all,

We have had concerns about my daughter for some time now around her speech development (about 250 words) and social skills. She has all these words but cannot yet make a sentence, She is 2 years and 4months old. She also does not pay attention to other children and is happy to play on her own although recently she has started to recognise other kids.... She has eye contact with us but it is fleeting as she never sits in the one place long enough....

She is full of energy and is always darting from one place to the next. She trys her best to copy what we are saying and also trys to copy some of her favourite characters on TV.

We have an appointment with Dr Sean Fennell in the Childrens Clinic soon and are hoping that he can help us...

To get to my question....have others out there any experience of Dr Fennell and how good he is and what will happen at this session we have with him..

    Thanks for any help

dont be too worried, believe it or not children at that age enjoy what you call solitary play and this means "playing without any regard for those around oneself. This kind of behaviour is frequently observed in young children where they are engrossed in their own toys and do not have any interest in other kids. you can look up information about this if you wish, there are many different stages of play and for a 2 year old this sounds pretty normal to me..

for the language development the following are a list of milestones that a 2 year old should meet, but saying that every child develops in their own time but you can use it as a guide to see if your daughter is meeting any of them

    Language development - 2 years
Can name a number of objects common to his surroundings
Is able to use at least two prepositions, usually chosen from the following: in, on, under
Combines words into a short sentence-largely noun-verb combinations (mean) length of sentences is given as 1.2 words
Approximately 2/3 of what child says should be intelligible
Vocabulary of approximately 150-300 wordsRhythm and fluency often poor
Volume and pitch of voice not yet well-controlled
Can use two pronouns correctly: I, me, you, although me and I are often confused
My and mine are beginning to emerge
Responds to such commands as "show me your eyes (nose, mouth, hair)"

and 2 year olds have lots of energy to be going around the place DONT label your daughter every child develops differently........

She just sounds like a normal two year old to me... my 20 month old is the exact same and I'm not worried about her in the least yet. We were at a bbq last week and she spent hours just going up and down a slide by herself not noticing any of the other kids around her. She also runs in and out of the hall constantly... She NEVER sits still and trying to get her attention is a battle... I don't think you should be worrying really... you're being too quick to think there is something wrong with your daughter when she seems to be acting just like a normal toddler...

just to say my fella at 2 had 4 words and at 3 had 25 words he is now 3.5 and can say 3 sentences of 3 words and has about 30 words and about 20 half words (can only say first part of word cant finish it). can put about 10 two word sentences together.

He is was assessed and it said he needed further assessment that was over a year ago. so far we have heard nothing but he is receiving speech therapy and has 1 to 1 and group sessions with the early intervention educator.

We were told they will not diagnose adhd until he is at school, he is wait listed for a full asd assessment.

we got him seen under the assessment for need act 2005 in which he had to be assessed within 6 months of application. We did this through his 2 year developmental assessment.

If he is on the spectrum its only mild. The main thing is his comprehension has improved even though his speech is over a year delayed.

    best of luck

Thanks for the replies. We Met with Dr Fennell and he was excellent. He spent nearly 3 hours with us and was very thorough. Our Daugter does not have Autism or Asperger, however she was diagnosed with MSDD - Multi System Development Disorder which is a a communication, social, and sensory processing problem. To try and correct this we have to do plenty of 1-2-1 with her and engage a Speech Therapist.

I'm glad she is getting the help she needs and I bet this time next year she will have made a big improvement. My guy got a special needs assistant for preschool in September. So if you feel she needs extra help next year at preschool make sure you mention it before April.
