We just received a new wireless eircom phone to use as our land line. The quality is absolutely rubbish. We are only renting it from them so it will be returned but what's the story?

sounds like you have a "cordless" phone, (albeit wireless), this is a wireless network forum which is a totally different wireless technology compared to the "wireless" phone you more than likely have.
