Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

C&C - Toyota Corolla

I got called to do a last minute shoot on this car for the international AE86 day which falls today. Met the guy yesterday evening and had two hours and one location to work with. It was only afterwards I realised how difficult it was to represent the cream colour of the car, so that explains the warm white balance as an afterthought.

As always, all C&C is appreciated !

The background ruins it for me, sorry

i guess from the engine picture that it is something serious as a car

    but

i cant help feeling like the car is a bit of a banger, doesnt look special at all

i think my fave images if the first one

although it does feel that it should be symmetrical, the car being offset doesnt feel right

The top picture looks great here at that size but looks really weird on speedhunters, like a cut and paste job. Odd.
Apart from that I really like the last one. As you always say yourself the human element is what makes a winner.

Dont like bootys , but i think the background does the car justice , fab shots.

Nice overall feel to the whole lot, firstly. I'd be curious to see what number 3 looked like with a polarizer on the lens, as the reflections on the windscreen are starting to distract me! Also the angle of the front wheel in that same shot seems a bit skewed - might have been nicer with a different alignment, probably just straight? It's making the car slump a bit.

Number 4 seems to lack focus on a specific area - I'd either go with a shallower depth of field and pick off an interesting feature, or stop down the lens and make everything sharp.

The lighting on all except #6 seems quite hard. Is it bare flash from speedlights? The hightlights on the car could benefit from a bit of defusion.

All in all though a nice set of shots, well-composed and thought out. Fair play

    Number 5

I like them. Industrial setting definitely works for me as from looking at the shot of the engine by a lot of work has gone into getting an engine from a Nissan Skyline or Silvia into the bay of the AE86.

    Great shots.

I would agree with some of the above, you have a great talent for the cars Paddy but this car doesnt show it. If you replaced this one with say for example the M3 CSL you did, it would be a lot different.

That said must be huge amount of work in the car, wicked amount of camber on the front wheels.

I think they look great (one and three especially) except number two, that one lets the set down

Ha, saw these on Speedhunters along with loads more of your work Paddy, big fan!! Love the background, suits the auld 86's well!

The 1st shot is just spot on, background etc adds so much character to the shot. The rest I'd still be proud of, but the 1st if my new wallpaper! :D

1 is quality, what lens did you use for it?. I like how the surrounding elements of the subject all contribute to the vibe of the pic. I like the post work too. The lightings great imo.

    Dont like the rest.

I think the shots are excellent Paddy, industrial really sets off Healy's car!

For those not in the know, this car is a serious wolf in sheeps clothing and the driver is not to excused, once driven, this car acts like a crab on steroids!

As always Paddy, a great fan of your work and would love if you have a how too thread of how you did this also.

    Cheers

Not sure I like the treatment - I think it works for the 1st photo, but not really for the rest.
I think maybe if the ground was wet, with a few more reflections from it, it might have looked better.

But like you say, you had to work with what you were given on the day.

I like what you've done with the 3rd shot there, the white strip of corrugated reflected in the windscreen. Can't really identify with the rest though, it doesn't help that the car really does nothing for me, just looks like some beat up old off-white thing. That said, I own an opel corsa which does a mostly commendable job getting me from A to B, cars aren't my thing :)

Also what does this even MEAN ...
For those not in the know, this car is a serious wolf in sheeps clothing and the driver is not to excused, once driven, this car acts like a crab on steroids!

Surely the increased muscle mass would cause its exoskeleton to crack open after days of agony, making the crab vulnerable to attack by predators, and infestation by internal parasites. The linkages from its muscles to its shell would be ineffective because of all the cracks and the crab would just starve to death in constant, almost unendurable, pain.

Errr...I think he means that it'll go sideways...drift,diff..or whatever you call it.

it's a crabwolf. or a wolfcrab. a wolf with a hard outer shell, but which looks like a bodybuilding sheep.

Cheers everyone for the comments, just getting a chance to read them now !

The car is definitely a marmite car but it has a huge cult following even though they aren't the prettiest of cars.

#3 was shot with a polarizer, what you're seeing is the elements of the heated windscreen. It looks horrid but there isn't a whole lot I could do to get rid of it :(

    The set was mostly shot with a Canon 70-200 2.8 L IS and a Sigma 50 1.4

The set is a bit rough as I didn't get a chance to really spend some time on them. The shoot from location scouting, to prep to the shoot itself to post processing to delivery and the accompanying text was all carried out in 24 hours. When things calm down some what here I'll definitely go back over them to tidy them up some !

    Thanks everyone :)

I had a look at your flickr, and I think there's better ones on there than you posted up here or on your site, just my opinion though :)

I like alot of your stuff but this is probably the weakest set I've seen you put up and as a few said the Car and the background do nothing for each other.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,313 ✭✭✭Mycroft H

I have to be honest. I dont like them.

The car isn't the best subject to start with - sure it may be a wolf in sheep's clothing but its still a bit of a banger.

Imo the first one is the best - even though the pile of styrofoam is distracting.

The engine shot is completely boring - noting exciting about it at all. More akin to what would be put auto trader when its being sold.

The background is very distracting too.

    One small thing to try...

Desat the greens (at least partially) in number 3.
