Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Questions on rent tax credits

    Hey all.

Started working again there this month, after 18 months of being out of work. Anyways, I registered with the PAYE site, and seen i can claim tax back as I'm renting.

I registered for my present apartment (2009-present) as well as where I lived from 2007-2009. I did each as a seperate property, and each seen me entitled to €2000 back.

However, at the end it said that the maximum I'm entitled to back is €2000... I'm just wondering does this mean I can only claim €2000 back for the whole three years? Or is there any chance of claiming back the full €6000?

Any help would be terrific, and the money would be very very handy.

    Thanks :)

Erm dunno where you're getting those figures from. Search www.revenue.ie
The max you can get back per year is €400

Sorry, it says 'Gross Relief due', is that different? I've barely a clue with the tax system to be honest :-/

    *EDIT*

Just checked, I see what you mean, you're right! Would I be entitled to that €1200 (€400 x 3) back?

You are only entitled to it if you pay income tax in each year it is claimed. I'm no expert at it.

    Moving to taxation

The €2,000 you are quoting is the maximum amount of rent on which you can claim relief. Then the relief is granted at 20% which gives you €400 - this is the maximum amount you can reclaim.

The Rent Tax Credit can only be refunded from tax paid in each year. But if you haven't worked for part of the last 3 years, you mightn't have a refund due as you may not have paid any tax.

    Hope that helps!
