    Hi Guys,

I recently got a new contract at work and I am just reading over it at the moment.I am working in the company for 10 years and have moved up the ladder to a line manager.

I would like someone in the know to read over it so I am not getting a raw deal and was wondering do I go to a solicitor who would know employment law or what do ye guys think.

Is there a certain time period I have before I have to sign it?

    Thanks for the help.

What do you mean a raw deal? The contract does not supersede your employment rights. You would be wasting your money going to a solicitor.

I find the only thing that really matters in your contract is your basic wage. If your new position usually has any perks you did not enjoy before you should get these included in your contract.

My contract was sufficiently vague. The yearly bonus is not guaranteed, flexitime is at the managers discretion and may be withdrawn at any time, and although my working week is 37 hours I am expected to stay long enough to get all my work done.

Don't waste your time with the solicitor. If there is something that is normally given to other employees, you should get them written into the contract. Your terms of employment can't be superceded. Also, make sure that your new wage/salary/renumeration is written into the contract.

Lastly, remember to get a copy of the document signed by the manager, and store it safely.

Thanks for the help guys. When I said raw deal I meant was there anything that would be sometimes put in contracts that mightn't be clear etc.I was told by a friend to go to someone who specialised in employment law to read over it.Ye probably think this is a bit over the top but I am just aprehensive about signing.

Is there a certain time period I have before I have to have it signed?

the time period is defined by your employer if they are narky really but the sooner the better.

the best person to explain your contract is someone with some HR skills or background so ask around someone you know might know someone like this.

is there any specific comments on the contract your unsure of outside the normal (if there is anymore) terms

I'm thinking he's afraid, in this climate, of getting screwed.
