Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Diesel - Civic / Astra / Focus ?

A friend of mine is moving up north and is set on getting an Astra or Focus diesel hatch. He has about £3-4k to spend and i suppose therefore is looking at ~2003-2005 cars.

Has anybody got an experience with the 1.7 CDTI Honda Civic?
He said he's wary of higher price parts on the Honda but is this offset by the fact that they dont go wrong? Are they even that much more expensive than Astras of Focus' to maintain?

Do any of these cars have DMF issues?

Any opinions or alternatives? Is the Octavia still the boards default car of choice?

I think the 1.7 litre diesel engine in the Astra and Civic of that era are Isuzu sourced. If so then that engine is pretty solid if a little unrefined by today's standards. Other 1.3 litre and 1.9 litre diesel engine options in the Astra are Fiat engines and are pretty reliable too.

Focus had two diesel options from 2005, the old 1.8 TDCi and a 1.6 TDCi which is a joint development with Peugeot/Citroen. The 1.6 TDCi is smoother and more refined than the 1.8 litre but it does have a DPF which may need replacing from 100k miles or more.

yeah the 1.7 astra diesel is a bit unrefined in comparison to the 1.3 and 1.9 in the range, but still had two astra diesels 1.7 ... very reliable, and not really thirsty..... on long drives around the country in the estate version was getting upto 1100km a tank........

That 1.7 engine was only used in the UK Honda Civic, never anywhere else. Honda worked on the Isuzu engine to make it more refined, so there's every chance it's better in the Civic installation than the Astra. 100bhp in the Civic.
I'd say it's decent enough, never drove one though.
