    Hi,
My sony laptop which is still in warranty has broken down. The backlight and the HDD has broken and so I lost everything. I am geetting a replacement from power city but I have just realised that I am not going to have all of my software. I had over €700 worth of work related software on the laptop are power city or sony responsible for paying for this?

Most software can be reinstalled and activated using the licence key you were given when you purchased it so essentially you shouldn't have lost anything except perhaps personal data (if you didn't back up regularly).

I don't think they would be responsible for consequential losses to applications or personal data.

You should be able to reinstall, if your licences are still valid then you can probably download the latest versions of each application if you can't find the disks. Another suggestion, for personal data, may be to see if they will let you give the HDD to a data recovery specialist.

Ok- how do you know that both the backlight and the HDD have broken.
Backlight is a common problem on laptops to the point of basically making a laptop useless. However in a lot of cases a HDD can be rescued by plugging it in as a second hDD for another computer.

software can be reinstalled and also you should have had discs and licences, if not then you should have got them at the time from the vendor so chase them up.
As for personal data, we are all guilty of not backing up, its not sony or PCs fault at all.

    First off,
You should always backup your data, any hardware can fail and its not the fault of the company if you don't backup your stuff.

Secondly, you should have the licenses and installation files for the software your running, if its work related then your employer should have it.

afaik SONY are one of those ****ty firms that DO NOT supply any discs with there laptops. When you first swtich on you get asked to supply a number of DVD's to make the software discs if OP didn't and many people don't then he hasn't even got an OS installation disc to get him started.

So I'd say its more an issue of the rights and wrongs of not getting orignal discs anything installed after that is the OP's problem.

The problem is the OP doesn't say its the sony supplied software he/she states its work related software, so the fault would be fully with the OP if he didn't keep licenses or install CD/DVD's.

No, and if you read the small print in the warranty document you'll see their liability is limited to the hardware.

They only have to return the product in the same condition you bought it at.

Nope. User has a hidden partition that they can reformat the laptop with.

So what use would that hidden partition be on a broken HDD?

The same amount of use that discs would be...
