Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Advice on buying a lens

I would be grateful for some advice on buying a lens.

I have a standard 18-55 lens which I use with my Eos 40d. I would like to upgrade to one of the following
    Sigma 17-70 f2.8
    Canon 17-85 is
    Canon 15-85 is

I have'nt done a huge amount of landscape photography but am getting a little more time and enjoying it. I am usually at G.A.A with a 70-200 f2.8 and would not have used a wide angle lens that much. But now with a little more time and my son, age 12 showing an interest in photography I gave him my 400d and kit lens so want something for my own camera.
Both Canons seem to have good range and the Sigma can be got for around €200. My budget is not huge and would buy 2nd hand if need be. WHAT WOULD YOU BUY?
Any help and advice would be much appreciated.
    Thankyou
    LeoB

If it's not too short on the long end, the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 is pretty nice. Got one recently and it's razor sharp at the wide end.

After reading on-line reviews I went for the non VR (IS) version as the more recent lens isn't supposed to be as sharp at the corners. Apparently it's 17mm is supposed to be wider than the 17mm on the Canon 17-55 and with a fast wide to normal lens IS isn't something you miss terribly... About €300 on ebay.
