Ladies, I'd be very interested to hear of your experience with the mirena coil.

I'm 32, no kids and won't be having them.

I've tried loads of pills from dianette to yazmin all made me bat shít crazy(even more so than the raging pmt I go through every month now).

    Any advice/ experience welcome.

No experience of Mirena but it's a hormonal contraceptive so if the pills have been having those effects on you I'm not sure the Mirena would help in that regard?

Hope you find something that suits you!

I've posted in this thread previously about my experience with Jaydess- it's like Mirena but smaller. It's actually designed for people that haven't had kids and younger women coz it's smaller. I believe the hormone dose is slightly less than Mirena too, it lasts 3 years instead of 5. Anyways, best money I ever spent. Insertion was uncomfortable, initial month or so had pretty bad cramps but all settled now. That reminds me I must be overdue for my one year checkup. If you've any specific questions just ask!

I had the Mirena fitted almost 3 years ago. I've no children and had it fitted as I was having continuous period which was very heavy (a four-month period is no fun :(). I had it fitted under general anesthetic as they was doing a biopsy as well. Apart from some spotting in the first couple of months, I've had no period since. No other issues with it, delighted I got it fitted.

I'm 31 and was wiht my GP on this issue just the other day. She's totally supportive of me going for a coil if I want and gave me some reading material to take home.

I'm pretty sure children aren't in my future plans but she didnt even ask me about that. She only said that if I changed my mind for whatever reason, that it could be removed and that even though over time its compatible with the cost of the pill, if for whatever reason you get it taken out early, then obviously thats a sunk cost so to speak.

She referred me to another GP who actually does them for a follow up consultation and to talk options. She'd recommend Jaydess as I've not had children but I'd still like to consider the copper coil because I'd be a bit nervous of the progesterone giving me skin troubles, so even though copper is maybe a bit old fashioned, I'd like to explore it further.

    Hi everyone,

So I've been off birth control for the last 3 years, but my periods are still highly irregular. I've asked my doctor about it twice now, and he's told me that he thinks I have a slight hormone imbalance. The thing is, both times he thinks the best thing to do is "give it time". At first I was happy enough with that, but it's been 3 years and myself and himself are now talking about kids.
Im not sure if I should go and get a second opinion or what to do really. Has anyone else here had similar problems? Or any advice? Dunno what to do so any suggestions welcome!!

I do, I am and I feel your pain! My periods stopped in Feb 2016 and haven't returned. They stopped due to a calorie deficit as I was cutting weight for a weightlifting comp, yet just as I increased my calories in April I had 6 months of back to back trauma in my life that halted any period making a comeback.
I have just finished in the medicinal system where I was tested, tracked, scanned, re-tested and re-scanned for a period of 6 months. The result; I am fit as a fiddle and my body *should* be working, yet it doesn't feel safe. I still have a great deal of stress in my life due to various things, and whilst I manage my stress levels as much as I can its not enough for my body to relax and do what its supposed to do.
I am also a huge believer in natural medicine and viewing your body holistically. I have increased calories significantly, cut back on the majority of my training, pulled out of competitions. But I have also given myself permission to be 100% selfish, sleeping at least 9h per night, ensuring I am eating the best quality produce I can afford and taking REALLY good care of myself. I don't mean I spend a fortune on clothes etc (cos i don't), I mean I find ways that my heart finds happiness and I do as much of that as I possibly can :) Warm fluffy jammies, long walks in nature, books books books, etc. Even saying no to events that I really don't want to attend. Right now, I am my biggest priority and I love the power it gives me.
When you say your Doctor ''thinks'' you have a hormone imbalance, have you had a full set of bloods taken? Have you had an ultrasound to rule out PCOS?
When you say your periods are irregular, how often do they come?
    Whats your diet like?
You know your body and you know what feels right. My advice is to get a second opinion but also be prepared to do some deep diving into the beautiful (and wonderful world!) of your own body.
There are many reasons why amenorrhea happens - the treatment can only be prescribed once the root cause is discovered.
Sending you ALL of my love! I feel your pain darling, you are NOT alone. I am always here to talk with you xo

Get a second opinion. I went to my doctor about irregular periods after stopping the pill 6 months perviously as we were trying to get pregnant and she fobbed me off with give it time, relax and it will happen etc. I wasn't happy with that because I felt something was wrong so I got a second option. Second GP did bloods and it turned out I had PCOS. That started off a whole journey of fertility treatment to get pregnant. If I had relied on my first doctor I would have wasted months.

Thanks for the advice Supermouse and Bee06!

Supermouse what my doctor has said previously when I've brought it up is that he thinks my hormones are "out of whack". He did blood tests at the time but other than that he really didn't say much else and he said he was a big believer in waiting and leaving things come back on there own. Which was alll very well and good three years ago, but it's something I'd like to get sorted now!

My diet is good in general, I have my treat days 😊 I gym three days a week and do yoga at least twice a week 😊

I actually made an appointment with another GP for today and he seemed to take it more seriously in fairness. I don't want to go back on the pill, so he's doing a blood test for me next week go see if I'm deficient in anything, and he says we can go for there then.

Thanks for all the help though 😊

If youre easily grossed out dont read this post.

Im late 20's, definitely not pregnant, no weight lose or gain and havnt had my period in 3 months, ive also had allot of discharge particularly in the last few weeks, its like ovulation but allot of it, this isnt a normal amount for me.

About 2 years ago my periods stopped for about 6 months, completely out of the blue, I went to my doctor but he was useless, sent me for some blood tests, everything came back clear and that was that he didnt look into further. He sent away for an appointment with a gynaecology but there was a 3 year waiting list, my period came back so saw no point in keeping the appointment. I dont recall having this much discharge at the time either.

Im unsure what to do? I feel like going to the doctor is pointless. Has anyone got experience with this?

Thanks, sorry for the overly informative post.

    Hiya,

I would advise you to get checked out but not by your GP but someone in the Well Woman Clinic or somewhere equivalent as they have a wealth of experience with women's health issues and IME would be better placed to investigate your issues.

Not sure where you're based but there's also the Charter Medical Clinic in Smithfield who have specialists there and who were extremely helpful with my own difficulties a few years ago.

Best of luck and I hope you get sorted soon!

Emilymemily have you had your smear in the last 2 years?

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,994 ✭✭✭sullivlo

If I were you I'd follow up with a doctor on this. Your GP would be a good start, or as another poster suggested a well woman clinic. There are long waiting lists to see gynaecologists, but if you can afford it, going private is an option. I was seen within a month going privately.

And as sunny said - have you had smears done and whatnot?

Emily a prolactin hormonal imbalance can cause periods to stop if it's very high. I had it a few years back - no period stoppage but boobs were very tender. I took one tiny tablet a day and it decreased my prolactin levels to normal.

Prolactin is a hormone produced by the piturary gland and it in pregnancy and post-natal the levels naturally increase to produce breast milk and inhibits ovulation too. But sometimes an imbalance can occur in non-pregnant women. (and it can fluctuate from high to normal quickly enough too) A simple blood test & a repeat blood test a week or so later can check the levels.

Start with a GP appointment and if it's high, you'll get referred to an endocrinologist. The wait time for me 5 years ago was 5 months on the public system, so the wait times might have changed.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Theres no Well womans clinics in my area but ill make an appointment with my gp in a few weeks. I had a smear test about a year and a half/2 years ago and although they found abnormal cells there was no trace of the HPV virus so it was all clear.
Neyite, thanks ill ask my doctor about a hormonal imbalance.

Did you follow up with the abnormal cells? If you had abnormal cells they usually recommend more frequent smears - has this been happening? Give your GP a call though - s/he should be able to offer some useful advice.

Well they sometimes inflate very slightly when your monthly would be due but rapidly deflate again within days! This happens only for so long though and it may happen for a year or more with some, with me it was gone after 3 months. I was determined to get bigger than my "bits" but couldnt face surgery so i done the booby course, Yay!

Sessions on a special machine which re-vitalizes growth hormones in the boobs.
They give you exercises and instructions. they also supply their own formula breast massage oil,and wow does it do lovely things for the twins.
Very professional and dignified. I got results in first 14week course but went repeating the course a few times (got greedy) :)
Used to be held in Galway and Athlone, but i heard the Galway one has now moved to Birmingham, athlone still open.

Name? A fair question! but i'm afraid i cant answer it, never saw it advertised even though its 19 months since my first course and i know other women who also attended it. We always referred to it as the "Booby course".
I was getting some skin-tags and marks removed there when i learned about it.
