I have posted elsewhere on Boards unnder hysterectomy about my wife's experiences. Like all women, she has a bit of a belly, but about 6 years ago. it got bigger, she was then 46, went to our GP. referred her to Wexford hospital, Gyno said 'get the hole lot out, what do you need them for'. Back to GP, referred to a private consultant, a kind, gentle man, who talked us both through what fibroids were etc. Said if it was his wife, he would advise on no action, but get the size checked every 2 years, or if she noticed a change. The only difference to before is that she needs to pee more often (pressure on bladder), so for sure get another opinion. Causes her no other problems. Check out the site Hystersisters - an American support group, Best Wishes.

I have a large fibroid which is causing some pain and heavy periods - I can live with it as its really only a problem around the time of the month, also am anemic - but I met with a Gyne and he has suggested I have a full Hysterectomy - I am 42 and I am not really ready for such a big Op - I am fearful of losing the ovaries and going into menopause right away :(
I have searched on line and two other alternatives have popped up - Myomectomy (surgery to remove the fibroid only) and Uterine Artery Embolization (cuts the blood supply off to the fibroid). My Hysterectomy is schedule for August but I am thinking of cancelling - or meeting with the Gyne again and asking about these two options - I am confused as to why neither was suggested by him in the first place - some background to my visit - he did not have my GP referral letter or my vaginal scan report - basically following a 5 min conversation he booked me in for the hysterectomy  I feel I am being railroaded into this Op without any alternatives.
Anyone any advice on how you have dealt with Fibroid and what treatments you had??
    Sorry for the long essay!

Hi i have had a few fibroids removed, have you talked to your gynie about having a myometomy (spelt it wrong i know). It is worth getting a second opinion on this, i am speaking from experience having being told by one dr i needed a hysterectomy, it turned out i didnt need that procedure done, if you pm me op i can give you more information.

Sorry hadn't a clue where to post this! But anyway does anyone know if the patch(contraceptive) is covered under the drug payment scheme? Thanks!

Just wondering if anyone could advise me on this.

Usually a week before my period I am absolutely wreaked tired, I have had exams all this week and have been going to bed really early in order to try and combat this. I am sleeping anything up to 16 hours, if I get any less than 12 I doubt I would be able to function.

Anyone have any experience with this? Anyone have any advice?

Well this isn't medical or anything, just what I do around my period because I get pretty run down too.

Eat more. Eat meat. Eat chocolate. Around exam time I also take a supplement, whether I'm on my period or not (pharmaton is what I take, but try whatever you want, like berocca or whatever). If you're not drinking much, try upping your fluid intake. I really do think it's the food thing though, even though I don't get any more hungry around my period, I find that making myself eat a little bit extra really does help.

When I was younger though, before I went on the pill, I had terrible heavy, painful periods and I'd be absolutely wrecked the whole time. During that time there were two supplements I used to take that made a big difference: Evening Primrose Oil, and Iron supplements. The difference in energy might have been because I was in less pain though.

Has anyone ever taken this? Did it work for you?

I took it a week ago roughly 52 hours after. The guy only had it in for a minute and was no way near ejaculating. It was one week after the end of my last period so I don't think I was ovulating yet. Thought it was best to be safe than sorry and took the pill. Still freaking out though!

I'd love to hear other experiences of taking this pill and what happened after, it might help me to put my mind at ease.

What are your thoughts on the morning after pill in general?

    Hi All,

Just wondering has anyone from the republic ventured north to get this done? I've been doing the math and between getting the prescription which means a consultation €50 and buying the thing €132 on DPS then getting inserted which is seen as a small procedure €150, i'll be broke. I've looked up clinics on the internet and in NI they seem to do the whole lot for £90. Currently on the depo injection but fed up with the injections. Anyone any advise. Thanks

My response does not regard the fee's of the device but just my experience of Implanon.
I had it fitted as I thought it would be very convenient not having to worry about contraception and things affecting it. For the first year I had absolutely no periods, the only thing I notice was I would get tender feelings around the area. After this time my periods reappeared but unfortunately they were coming twice a month so I was two weeks on and two weeks off. I then started getting cramps very badly and my pharmacist suggested perhaps the hormones weren't working anymore and it was my body trying to regulate itself. This led to my decision of getting it removed, the process was not painful but it was not a nice experience at all and now I have a horrible scar left on my arm, although towards the inside it is still very noticeable.
I know you have probably read numerous reviews while researching this product but to be honest I do not think its worth it, patches or the injection imho.

As regards price, it costs around €100 for removal as well, I know it would be three years down the line but it is still to be considered. I would also make sure if you are getting it done to go to a doctor experience in the insertion of Implanon as some doctors have a lot better techniques than others.

how much does the pill cost every month? thanks

It depends on what Pill you are prescribed. I'm on Ovranette and as far as I can remember it costs between four and five euro a month. I think this is the lower end of the scale. You also have to factor in GP/nurse visits to get the prescription, get your BP checked etc. This costs me fifty euro every six months.

  • Registered Users Posts: 636 ✭✭✭cute_cow

Same as Novella. €50 per GP visit. Taking Cerazette and it costs €16 a month. As far as I am aware, if you "bulk" buy, meaning buying 6 months in 1 go, it won't be €16 per month, a small amount smaller than that, if I am making myself clear!!

I think it depends on which pill you're on and where you buy it. Mine is ~13.50euro per month. And 50euro GP visit every 6 months.

When choosing a pill with the advise of you doctor cost shouldn't be the main factor. It can be hard to find one that suits you and this should be the main concern (as well as using it correctly).

I'm on Ovranette, as Novella said, four or five euro a month sounds about right, but I get it 6 months at a time and if you buy it in bulk like that it costs close to a tenner (which is crazy cheap compared to when I used to be on Microlite).

As mood said, finding the right pill for you should be your primary concern, but definitely ask your doctor about price. If I had known how much cheaper Ovranette would be while I was on Microlite I certainly would have considered changing far sooner. Don't be embarrassed to express concern about price (I was at first).

  • Registered Users Posts: 326 ✭✭evilmonkee

It costs ~15 for Yasminelle plus 6 monthly doctors visit.
It is a combined pill with very low dosage so maybe thats why its more expensive?

As other posters have said getting a pill which suits you can be difficult so I would budget for the highest and hope for a lower price.

I'm on Marviol and it's very cheap, about €30 for a 6 month supply. Prices vary wildly between pill types though, I was previously on other ones that cost at least double what I pay now.

    Hey,

Just yesterday I noticed that my boobs seem to have gotten bigger - maybe up a cup size or so? They're not sore or anything, just plumper.

I've been on microlite for the last 6 months now, and I'm wondering could this be it. It's definitely only happened in the last few days I think.

I am sexually active, but I'm careful to take the pill every day at the same time, and I had my last period 2 weeks ago.

Is this anything to worry about?

We really can't answer that for you. If you're worried about being pregnant, take a test. There's one or two that can give you a pos or neg a couple of days before your first missed period. Two weeks into your cycle is probably still a bit early, though.

    Hi ladies,
Some advice regards Implanon would be greatly appreciated. My girlfriend is 18, we've been going well over a year now and would like a robust form of contraception.

If anyone has used it, how have you found it?
Also where would we go to have it done? Would my local G.P. provide it?
Oh and the cost? Those of you that did get it, how much was it in total?

Any information would be of help.
    Thanks a lot :)

(If this is in the wrong forum, I apologise!)

    Hey Indestructable,

This is the thread for all non-medical queries on contraceptives - think you'll get some answers here.

    All the best.

    Hi Indestructable,

The implant has to be inserted by a g.p. and last for three years. Once inserted, your girlfriend will be given a plastic card, like a credit card or library card, with the date of insertion and expected date of extraction which serves as a reminder. I used the implant for just over six years, and in general, I had a good experience with it. As with all hormonal contraception, there are side effects to be expected and you and your girlfriend should ask your g.p. for all the information you can get about both the benefits and side effects, so that your girlfriend can decide if she wants to use it. I have noticed that my mood is not great since I've had it removed. I did expect that, though, and I'm sure it will pass once my body is used to being without the implant. I'm not sure what the cost is for the implant, because I have a medical card (I'm a student) but I think it might be roughly about €300. Best of luck with everything.

    Hi guys,
not sure if this is the plce for this post , but I'm sure one of the lovely mods will point me in the right direction if not :)

I've pretty much always had an irregular period the biggest gaps were maybe 2 months aprt but no particular date I could pin down.

Anyway a few things have been weird in the last few months and I've started to link then to the time I had was due or just after my period .

In December just gone I got hive like bumps all over my thighs and got heat rash on my face my period started the next day and the hives took a week or two to go.

In january I got very down and anxious ,crying for pretty much no reason , everything was upsetting me, my brain was constantly thinking , and not positive things! I never usually get like this before a period,35 days since my last, it was a horrible feeling and an experincr I would never wish in anyone , I saw my new doctor for the 1st time and because I had mentioned I had been having a drink a few times a week with the post xmas socialising etc he said it may be that. Ran some blood tests for thyaroid just incase , said they were fine . Anxiety went during my period.

Feburary I was 35 days again from last period and got super anxious towards the end ofnmy period , down , worried everything was doom and gloom and it lasted a good week + . I went to my doctor as I had recieved my medical card jay because I felt so low and I never usually like this , he advise to try and find some vitamins and maybe talk to a counsellor, and because my aunty ha had thyroid issues he wasn't ruling it out , but thought it was defo hormonal. I started to take vitamin b6 as I saw this calcium and magnisium seem to have good effects on period probs.

In march I got a chest infection and was on antibiotics my period only came this week , I've notice I've been a little anxious etc not to the same degree as other months kind of headachy before my period and very weak lightheaded etc and kind of stomachy pukey ill feeling.

My question is does anyone else experience this ?
I have had alot of stress in my life over rhebpast couple of years and it has never made me feel this way. I usually might be a little cranky sore boobs etc before a period but now headachy weak cryig depressed anxious .

Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

Hi Girls, I am 25 and never had a baby, but would like one in maybe 3 years or so. Anyway Im on the pill at the minute, but want to come off it, as I feel the hormones are making me put on weight, I also have some irregualar bleeding, and I hate having to take it every day. My sister said I should try the copper coil, as it has no hormones. Anyway I went to family planning clinic to get swabs (have to rule out infection) and the doctor was a bit dismissive of me, saying it will be very hard to insert, I will suffer very heavy cramps and bleeding. I'm not sure where i stand, she was quite dismissive of the weight gain factor also, even though I told her I eat healthy and exercise regularly. Anyone here any stories of when they got one? I don't mean the Mirena, I mean the hormone free one!!

I've never had the coil, so I'm afraid I can't give you advice on that, but just wanted to concur, I've found some doctors very dismissive of my concerns about being on the pill. I know the dosages are low, but I really don't want to put any hormones in my body, I did for the best part of 10 years without really thinking about it, and I just don't feel comfortable with it now.

Find another doctor, mine's a gem, so's the nurse there
don't know anything about the coil but if you find another doctor they can talk through these things with you and suggest a load of options, that's what mine did

Hi, just going unregistered for this as I don't want to post from my main account.

I'm 18 years old and was prescribed the pill last year for my periods as I get really terrible cramps. Initially I was on Dianette, but it gave me problems with my skin and made me feel very depressed, so I was put onto Yasminelle. I was taking that up until recently. I noticed I felt depressed again, and took a couple of months off from it. I felt better off the pill but couldn't stay off due to the period pain. I went back to Yasminelle but needed to switch. My doctor has now prescribed me a new pill called "Zoely."

I'm a bit worried about taking this new pill. My chemist had never heard of it, and I don't know of anyone that's been on it. From looking at a few people's experiences online, they all seem negative. I'm also a bit concerned about the way you have to take the pill - instead of taking 21 tablets and having a 7 day break, you take 24 active tablets and 4 placebos. Now, I know that nobody here can tell me what to do or not to do about this particular pill - I'll need to go to the doctor. But has anyone taken this pill, and what have your experiences been? My main dilemma is that I have my Leaving Cert next month, and I really can't be messing around with things like this too much. It's also not an option to just not take it, because then my period would fall during the exams and I can't have that. Basically I'm just really worried about this, and want to know if anyone has had any experiences with it.

Never take the internet's opinion seriously. People are far quicker to talk about negative experiences than positive experiences.

I'd advise you to go to your doctor with a list of questions you want to ask.
