    Hi,

I know this is a little off topic from last few posts and not sure if I've postedin correct place. Plan on going for a hollywood wax on Thursday. Normally I d.i.y. it so to speak. Just looking for any advice or prep that anyone could recommend?

    Thanks

    Sm.

Some people take painkillers but I never do. I do however go to Waxperts who are waxing specialists and don't offer other services. They also have their own range of wax which they sell to other salons, it's way less painful. Wherever you go ask if they double dip. If they do, run! More info on that here http://www.waxperts.ie/about-waxing/

Absolutely no connection to the salon other than as a long term customer. I would never go anywhere else even though it's way out of my way. As a last resort I might consider somewhere that does their wax as long as they didn't double dip.

Have a shower and exfoliate, thats about it. It only takes 15 minutes or so, wouldn't waste time taking painkillers. Just ask them how they do it first, hot wax every time, strips are a killer.

Just wondering has anyone had any experience of ongoing thrush symptoms that don't go away after pessaries or Flucanazole? I've had all the symptoms of thrush in their most severe form for the last 6 weeks, aggravated when I walk, go to the bathroom etc.

Doc took a swab and the results showed no sign of yeast, but prescribed me Flucanazole and a pessary to be sure. Took these (2 weeks back) and symptoms didn't go away, and they have been no better the last few weeks. Haven't been able to have intercourse as it hurts too much, going to the bathroom causes great discomfort (burning, itching afterwards), and materials rubbing off it too much causes severe itching.

No STDs, so not sure what else it could be if the swab is showing no yeast? Is it possible it might be just the external symptoms that need time to clear up, but the internal cause is gone?

Understand that no medical advice can be provided, but anyone who can share experiences please do!

Hormone levels can trigger it. Thrush was my first and really only, pregnancy symptom, had it for the entire first trimester.
I think that's a good idea IWMD. Thanks so much to everyone who replied. Water seems to be the only thing that gets rid of it.

Try a double-void when you pee. A gynae told me and it has helped me dramatically reduce the cystitis bouts I got: Pee, wait a few moments then squeeze another few drops out so your bladder is fully emptied.

What happens there is that usually there is a small amount of urine still left in your bladder where the bacteria continues to grow. By making this pool smaller less bacteria can multiply and it helps prevent it from spreading to your kidneys. And heaps and heaps of water, cotton underwear, avoiding thongs, and careful wiping also help, but I found the double-void really worked for me.

    Hi gals,

I think I might have to come off the pill due to a missing sex drive* :(. Am terrified at the thought because I've been on it for my whole adult life. Has anyone any experiences of coming off the pill they can share? I don't know if I'll suddenly get cheerier/moodier/thinner/fatter/more cramps/heavier periods... Would love to hear any experiences you could share!

*Changing pill isn't really an option. Have been on half a dozen brands over the years and really really don't want to change again.

I came off Yasminelle summer 2013 and now taking nothing.
Pre pill my periods used to be very heavy, number of days in a cycle could fluctuate a lot and I would sometimes get very bad cramps. Was fine on the pill.
Came off it. No immediately obvious changes eg no mood swings. Periods have stayed lighter and cycles more regular. Hair less shiney now though than when on the pill and skin drier and more prone to breakouts :(
    Edit: no changes in weight.

Came off the pill in 2010 to try for a baby and noticed an immediate increase in my sex drive - hubby thought it was for baby making! But when my drive is still at the increased level after the babies and I won't be going back for more hormonal contraception. Also my period was no different

Does anyone have any experience of Yaz?

I started it 4 weeks ago tomorrow. 24 days on and 4 days off. I'm due to start it again tomorrow but I haven't gotten any sign on a period yet. The pack does say to start your next pack regardless of whether or not your period has started etc so it's obviously something that does happen.

Would it be common not to get a period at all while taking the pill?

I'm taking it to regulate my cycle but I didn't get a period for years when on depo provera and then took a long time for my body to get back to any sort of normality. I swore I'd never put hormones in my body again but I needed to do something to regulate it!

I'll start the pack tomorrow anyway and give my doc a buzz if I'm worried but just wondering if anyone else has experienced similar.

I had something similar when I started on the pill. It wasn't yaz though. But it is common enough for the pill to take a while to sort things out based on conversations with friends.

Just wondering if anyone who's been on Yasmin has experienced lower abdominal cramping throughout the month?

Rather than a bit of cramping in the few days before my period, I'm having mild-yet-noticeable cramping nearly everyday, that gets worse before my period. Anyone else have this?

I just saw this and since it's 3 weeks ago I hope it's sorted but just in case it isn't or for anyone else, I got a bout after a course of anti bios that wouldn't clear off for a while. I did use whatever that cream was but I also had to resort to cutting out sugar from my diet completely for a while, and anything with yeast in it
And I mean completely, no milk or yogurts or juice or fruit or bread or anything
    did the job

I was on it for years. I think I'd get my period usually on Day 4 of the break, iirc. I *think* sometimes it might have even been the day I started back on it that my period would come in the early days.

I got a period every month with it, but my friend was on Qlaira, which is another 24 day pill I believe, and her periods pretty much stopped.

So I'm 2 weeks after my c section and interested in getting the copper coil (I don't do well with hormonal birth control). My gp said I have to go to my family planning clinic to get it fitted, does anyone know how much a copper coil costs to get fitted? Is it painful, any info on the copper coil would be greatly appreciated. I have to wait another 4 weeks so I want to make sure I'm making the right choice

It can vary, usually you have an consultation and then a fitting.
Ball park it's usually 50/60 for the consultation and then 200 - 250 for the fitting. The follow up check up 6 weeks later is usually free.

Both the IFPA, Femplus and the Wellwoman clinics do them and if you dont' live near one of those they can usually refer you on.

I have a mirena IUD so while not the same is fitted Im if same way. I paid 60 for the initial consultation, 130 for the prescription and 250 for fitting and follow up check. Although my GP was not qualified to place it one of the other GP's in the practice was so it was handy not to have to go elsewhere!

Hi ladies. I have the implanon fitted since August 2012. The first year was fine, some irregular bleeding over the first few months and a bit moody but grand otherwise. Over the last few months though it has become unbearable. My emotions are all over the place, I am constantly at the boiling point of rage or on the brink of tears, I have gained 2 stone (despite being careful with food and tracking what I eat as I have previously struggled with my weight, this time it won't budge), my hair is constantly greasy, it looks awful within 6-8 hours of washing it (and I've tried every trick in the book of fixing it), I've developed acne for the first time in my adult life and I have had one week of not bleeding in the last 6 weeks. I am constantly tired and moody, and am getting blinding headaches 2 or 3 times a week every second week. I saw a doctor recently who was utterly clueless about the implant (my mistake, I should have requested a doctor who had a good knowledge of contraception) and he said that he would research how to remove it  but that with my migraines it would be unlikely I could use another form of contraception bar barrier methods :eek:

I've made an appointment to see a different doctor this weekend to discuss my options properly but I honestly don't know what they'll be. I'm not looking for advice but I am interested to see if anyone else had similar experiences.

I've never had the implant but I used to be on the pill which contains the same hormones. I had a lot of similar symptoms to you, although the symptoms were mostly mood-related. I was trying to lose weight and forced myself to eat next to nothing (an unfortunate episode brought on by the pill making me miserable) but it still took me 4 months to lose a stone. My skin and hair were dreadful too.

Like obviously I can't advise you about your options and I have no experience of having the implant removed. But I felt a million times better as soon as I came off that pill. I wasn't depressed and I began eating normally again, and my skin and hair regulated themselves to a certain extent. The difference I felt after a week was incredible.

It sucks that your options are limited due to the migraines, but you seem to be having a very hard time of it. When I was in your shoes, staying on that pill was not worth what I was going through. That probably doesn't help at all, sorry :o

Ah no it does! It's nice to know that I am not alone in being this messed up from hormones haha. For the people it works for, the implanon seems great, I wish it didn't affect me like this! I used to be allowed take the normal pill but I got my first migraine with aura when on it, so I can't anymore! It's such a shame.

I was really hoping I could get the Implanon as I was only 19 but there was no way I was going to put myself through all of that.

The migraine situation is a shame. But I guess it comes down to a choice between contraception and quality of life really. Hopefully you'll figure something out that works for you :)

Charlie I used to get focal migraines too so can't take the combined pill, but could use the implant, mini-pill (progesterone only), injection, patch or coil. So there could still be a lot of options available to you, just make sure you go to a doctor who can talk about them all and won't just push the pill or any one form in particular.

  • Registered Users Posts: 81,310 CMod ✭✭✭✭coffee_cake

The stick in my arm drove me insane too charlie
It just doesn't suit some people!

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,579 ✭✭✭charlietheminxx

Thanks so much for your input guys! I was on the mini pill cerazette prior to the implanon but moved because of constant spotting. I was told I couldn't get the patch though as it uses oestrogen? That's interesting, certainly might be an option! I asked for the mirena coil but the doc was hesitant to give it to me as I haven't had children, and said it would be preferable to try all other options first. I do feel better having spilled my guts here as I don't have many close female friends to talk to about this sort of thing, so thank you all. Just knowing I am not going mental is a relief :P looking forward to a chat with the doctor now.

The Mirena not great if you haven't had kids argument is mainly to do with insertion being a bit triskier in women who have not had a child. There are a number of women without children on this forum (including me) who have had a Mirena successfully. Mine was not used for contraception but to stop horrendous bleeding, which it did, in its tracks.

Apparently they're also planning to market a smaller version for women who haven't given birth.

Has anyone here had any experience of weight gain on the progesterone only pill(POP)? I went back for my three month check up only to be horrified to be told that I'd put on over 6kg since starting it.

If this is causing weight gain I want to stop before starting my next pack on Monday, but I'm undecided what to do. It's nice to be covered by the pill but it's not worth this.

I'm on a progesterone only pill, and haven't put on weight. I have noticed a significant increase in the feeling of being hungry, which I've now come to learn to ignore. Every doctor will tell you it may increase appetite but no pill will make you put on weight.
