Hi ladies. I am thinking about coming off the pill. I was on Microlite for about 18 months and switched to Marviol after that so I've been on some type of pill for a little over 3 years at this stage. Last time I renewed my prescription they only gave me one month because it's under review. I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow to have myself checked over for a new one but I'm now considering coming off it. I'm single so no need for it in that regard. I originally went on it because my cycle was all over the place. I'd be curious to see if losing weight would have made any difference. Has anyone any experience with coming off the pill?

    Thanks :)

Came off mine for about 4 months. Didn't last very long without it. Found my periods were so heavy and had terrible cramps and PMS.

I had been on the pill for maybe 10 years and forgot how horrible PMS is. Brought back some horrible early teen (pre-pill) memories.

Could be different for you though. Personally never have an issues with weight gain whilst on the pill so can't comment there.

    I would do the test.

I am on it 4 months now and the bleeding is awful. 4 two week periods since I started and they are not light either! Anyone else have an idea on the time frame I can expect this to be over in?

Thanks did the test and it was negative should count my blessings considering the rubbish experiences some of the people on here have had

I had mirena fitted about two weeks ago. The first week everything was fine but in the last couple of day I have had really bad cramping. Now my doctor did warn me about this but I wasn't expecting it to be this bad. I'm probably just been a moaning minnie but I haven't had "period pains" like this since I was a teenager and that was nearly 30 years ago.:(:o:(

Going for the appointment for the implant today. Hopefully getting it fitted tomorrow. I've two little girls (under 3) and no plans for more. I'd go for the coil but I'm still nervous about the idea if it. Maybe after my next smear I'll be more open to the idea - l have only had 1 so I'm still new to it. Also, no pun intended... :)

This goddamn Cerazette. I've only been on it 10 days but over half of those days I've been bleeding, quite heavily and I'm in agony. I haven't had pains like this since I was a teenager. Early days yet but I don't think I can put up with it past a month. I'm going to stay on it until at least then and see how it is. But if I do have to change, I'm not sure how worth it it would be to move to the implant because surely it would have fairly similar effects with it being the same hormones. But going off contraceptives, except condoms, isn't something I'd be comfortable with at all either. What a pain in the arse this is. :(

Have a Mirna about 14 months and have been having a bleed since Friday. It explains the atrocious PMS symptoms I was experiencing last week which is great but I'm kinda wondering how long it will last esp as I need to book a smear test soon. Very annoying to come out of the blue like this! Its my first proper "period" since getting it so I'm curious if others get this too.

I'm on it 3.5 months now ... I had annoying constant bleeding for the first month, then nothing at all, then a normal period about a week ago. So far I'm happy enough and amn't really noticing any side effects.

I still think I'll probably go for the mirena coil or something similar when the six month prescription is up, though.

So I went in for the appointment and didn't like the sound of the side effects of the implant and decided to go for the Mirena coil. Had it put in on saturday. Seriously thought about having a few shots before going in... But it was fine. Felt a bit scrapey but i fully expected it to be worse. Small few cramps front and back but other than that fine. My period is still trailing off - no heavy bleeding since it was put it. I'll check back in a month - they gave me a sheet to log the bleeding so when I go in for the checkup I can let them know how I'm doing.

Funnily enough I actually thought the coil was much worse than it actually is after looking in to it. Is it only recommended for women who have had children do you know?

nope I'm childless and got the Mirena. I was the same and thought it was worse than it is!

The problem is that, if you haven't had children, it's more likely to fall out. It would have been my choice of contraception for years, if it weren't for that, it costs a lot of money for something that might just fall out!

Even now that I've had a kid, and the risk is way lowered, I'm not sure if it's worth the risk of it maybe falling out, seeing as it's so expensive ... but it's a pain in the ass taking the pill every day when I know I won't be having more kids for at least a few years ... hard to know what the best option is!

If I could get the coil, but with the promise of a refund if it didn't stay in, that's definitely what I'd go for! :D

Jaysus, I didn't know this was a factor. I wonder what the likelihood of that is, percentage wise like.

I seem to remember it being around 20%, if you haven't had a baby? I'm not sure though! That was pretty much the only thing that put me off it before.

Also make sure, if you get it, to go to a doctor who is very experienced in putting them in. There's a tiny risk of infertility as a result of infection if they're put in incorrectly. There are plenty of doctors around who specialise in womens health and contraception etc - go to one of these rather than just a regular GP.

just crampy during and after. I'm an idiot and went in on an empty stomach then wasn't allowed take a painkiller. Would have been grand if I had. Hot water bottle helped loads after too :)

I hadn't heard about it falling out, sounds a bit extreme. You go back for a checkup after a few weeks so if doc is experienced all should be well.

Yeah, I'd say I'll go to my regular gp to talk about it and probably get her to recommend somewhere. It's seeming more and more like the best option for me, I think I'm done with more hormones.

Thanks girls, appreciate the help. :)

I'm thinking of getting it soon, and haven't had kids. The gp who talked me through it said the risk of it falling out is very small, but possible...she didn't have exact figures but if it was as high as 20% I don't think she would have said "very small", especially as with contraception "very small chances" in general tend to mean less than 1-2%!

2.9% is the possible expulsion rate of the mirena if being used for contraception if there is a history of endo or fibriods then it can rise to 8.9 to 13.6%

Also anyone with the mirena, how much bleeding have you experienced on it?

Very little. I think there might have been a "period" a month in. Ooh now that i think of it i did, and it coincided with my 6 week checkup! Am on it over a year and only started bleeding on Friday for the first time since then, apart from v occasional spotting that went away immediately

My thoughts exactly. Planning to get a Mirena once I'm done with kids and hoping I get that benefit!

    Oh man, that sounds heavenly.

And my Dr has told me I can keep getting them replaced and hopefully will there for miss many of the effects of starting 'the change' like the peri menapausal floods! She will monitor me with regular hormoane panels.

I had no bleeding on the Mirena either, but then I hit the lovely floods you mention, complicated by fibroids and couldn't have another Mirena inserted. Went for uterine arterial embolisation (UAE) in the end which stopped the floods and has left me with funny really light periods - these may well be what other women have as normal, but to me they seem very light.

The Mirena and 'the coil' are two different methods, in case there is confusion.

Actually there's the Mirena coil and the copper coil.

The Mirena is an IUS, InterUterineSystem and the copper coil is and IUD InterUterineDevice. But it seems people want to call anything which is placed in the womb as a Coil. I have never heard any health professional use the term Merena Coil and I have my 3rd Mirena fitted atm.
