jaysus there's a fair lot of ye in debt.

There's nothing wrong with debt as long as you can afford to pay it back.

    Sorry to hear.

I've gone through college supporting myself with long hours weekend jobs, and the last 3 years in a job, renting an apartment. Couldn't afford a car + insurance at the moment, so I'd rather just walk to work or whatever instead of get myself into debt of any kind.

It'll be a different ball game when I get married in a few years though

is it gold leaf? or are you a TD looking for an extra few quid by overpricing jobs??

I reckon about 25K would make a huge difference at the mo, clearing bills, cars etc
but am open to any donations :-P

    Change my life eh?

Well, I currently have no loans (unlike everyone else apparently), but I am still living at home and going to college.

I have enough money to fly one way to anywhere in the world, so with no debts that's pretty much the price for anyone to change their life.

recently got a new job with a massive pay increase compared to what i'm used to, so about 5 grand to help me get some stuff in order would be a massive help. nobody's gonna just hand it to me though, but saving i should have it by jan/feb.

€100,000 to pay off the house and give two-fingers to the bank
€40,000 to do up the house
    €30,000 for a new car
    €2,500 for a holiday

So €172,500 in total, and then I could relax and work for 2 weeks a month for the rest of my life earning minimum wage without any worries.

About €100,000 would mean that I could pay for a lot of annoying shíte and get it out of the way. €250,000 means I'm more or less set up until I get a nice cushy number of a job. of course, the ideal amount is about €15,000,000... comfortable for the rest of my life (I don't intend to live beyond 35....):D

€2,000 should clear the rest of my car loan. That would make a difference, I suppose.

For the record, as I drive several hundred km most weeks, I'd much rather have my car and be in debt, than to be saving religiously and spending several hours on the bus each week! I don't resent the repayments one bit. Worth every cent. I got the loan at the start of final year in college, no repayments interest-free for a year. Love my car and couldn't do without it, especially since I got a job the other side of the country after college!

I really don't get the debt-free smugness ... live a little! As long as I have something to show for it, I don't mind paying for something over time rather than straight away.

But to change my life significantly, it would take a lot more than 2k! Maybe €50,000? Get in a bit of travel, and use the rest on a deposit for a house (and to clear my outstanding debts, of course.)

Meah. If someone wanted to give me a fiver, I'd be quite happy with that! :pac:

Eh, the question states "change your life SIGNIFICANTLY"

So you'll definitely want a McFlurry, so maybe €10.50?

I have to admit, I'm amazed by how high most of the answers are.

Maybe I over-emphasized the idea of 'significantly' but I really was referring the minimum it would take to make a noticeable difference in your life... some posters seem to have gotten it with suggestions like the 30k deposit needed to buy themselves a house, a few thousand to go back to college and re-train etc. the posts refering to 15million etc. are completely missing the point: that sort of money would completely transform any normal person's life - never having to work again, pay off three mortgages etc.

For those saying their entire mortgage - is that really the minimum it would take for your life to be noticeably different? Would half that not make a big difference to your disposable income and therefore your day to day life? A quarter of it even?

tldr - the idea of this thread is the minimum it would take to have an effect on your life, not how big you'd like your lotto win to be.

It's a good question – under a certain amount and I'd just save it. Over that amount and I'd not really change the way I spend/live until the figure got quite large – €60,000 – €150,000?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 784 ✭✭✭marzic

optimum minimum €700k which is approx 2nd prize in euromillions, otherwise €190k to clear the mortgage

20 grand would sort out a lot of things for me that I need sorting out, so I'd say 20 grand.

8 grand would immediately get absorbed into different things like my rent for the next year, basic living expenses and money owed to one or two people, things that would be nice to pay off straight away and ease financial pressures for next year.
But the other 12 grand I could put towards things that could get my life moving a bit, like getting a cheap car, and having a few grand to buy things like books for college, clothes and maybe a grand or two left over, just as a reserve fund for unexpected little things I might have to pay for. College would be a lot more fun without the pressure of having to work or watch your money!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 122 ✭✭Tarzan_man

Ah sure, 3 grand would be lovely. Anything more and I'd just be greedy!

I think my 10 to 15 Million Euro is a reasonable contender to fulfil those obligations. But I was considering rounding that upwards.

But you actually seem to have two questions, not obviously, but in this reply you are now hinting at what's the minimum to mark time as you are now. Then hundreds of thousands in the low numbers would do that.

To change it significantly, well frankly that needs millions. If you already are a millionaire, then to change that life style you'd need a few billion.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,971 ✭✭✭we'llallhavetea_old

only a couple of grand to clear off debts, but i'd rather clear off my parents mortgage, so over a hundred grand anyway.

    please and thank you :)

What I meant was just enough to have a noticeable change on your day to day life. i.e. a fiver's not going to change anybodies day to day life, whereas €5k for a second hand car and insurance would make a marked difference to anyone who doesn't currently have one.

Obviously, the wealthier you are, the bigger the sum of money you'd need to have a noticeable impact on your life.

Ten to fifteen million would be life altering to all but the wealthiest individuals so unless you're trying to point out how wealthy you are I don't see how it would take that much to affect your life. The vast majority of people would see a noticeable change in their life with far less than that:

€250k would be enough to pay off most people's mortgages but how many people need their entire mortgage cleared to see a difference? €25k would be sufficient for most people to buy a brand new car / replace their kitchen / go to college for a few years and get a degree etc. €5000 would be enough for any debt-free single person who's currently on the dole in Ireland to try a new life elsewhere or travel for the next year or so in the hope that their prospects would have improved in the next year or two.

hehe this thread is makin me dream of what it'd be like if I won the lotto - not millions needed just couple hundred thousand to make life so much better. But more realistically €20 k would do it... been saving a while & have €12 k in credit union and this extra €20 k would help for a deposit on a house and maybe bit extra for a nice holiday!!
