Brand new old-model cars V the new version

Today in traffic I spotted a 10 reg. Opel Astra, but it was the 2004 to 2009 model. It got me thinking about brand new old-model cars v their band new replacements.
Has anybody ever purchased one ? ??
The main advantages of them is that I can think of is that they are in stock for immediate delivery and I assume the dealer is giving good discount to get them moved from the forecourt
Personally I’d feel like I missed an opportunity to have the latest version. And even though it was brand new people would refer to it as the ‘old model’
    Any thoughts ??
Further to the above what is the youngest reg. number you have seen on older model car, in other words for example.
A mate of mine rang me about seeing a 00 reg. ford escort hatchback (there is even a 01 model on carzone today) even though the focus is 99 onwards.

It would have to be an excellant discount for me buy the old model..
You have to think about depreciation aswell because your brand new older model is going down hill much faster.

Well that 04-09' Astra may have been a genuine sale.
I dont know when the New model appeared, it may not have been available in January 2010.

The very common one though is the old Mark-1 Octavia still being made new.

I was wondering what was going on with those Octavias

Sometimes the old models have either a cult following, perceived better shape or more potential aftermarket support which makes them more desirable than new models, ie the Audi B5 A4 vs B6 and the BMW E39 vs e60 or the Audi A8 D2 "Final Edition".

On "stuff" like the Astra, no idea why someone would buy last of the old models, they possibly dont care either way.

I appreciate some new models do not come out until mid year and that all car buyers are not necessarily car enthusiasts but surely they would do some research.
I know that car dealers are only as honest as they have to be surely they would be obliged to inform them that ‘there is a new model later this year’ after all if they were to buy the old model in Jan/Feb the car is going to depreciate twice that year. First by putting on the reg. plate and second by the new model hitting residuals on the old models.
They might make that sale but they will hardly retain the customer in future
Some ‘run out’ special editions are class and would leave me with a problem e.g.
Bentley Arnage ‘Final series’ or would I hold on for the new Mulsanne
(although this side of a freak lotto win I ain’t gonna have that problem !!!!)

Was it a 3 door or 5 door hatch, saloon or estate? AFAIK only the 5 door hatch has been launched as a new model yet, all of the other variants remain as the old model.

    it was 5 door hatch

it was only the astra got me thinking about it

    other examples are:

I have seen a few 2010 registered mark 3 Toyota Avensis cars around Dublin! So it seems a lot of car distributors where left with old stock!
I know personally that the Toyota Distributors on the Nangor road, where left with 100's of new Corolla Verso's and Rav4's, all beacuse of their high emissions, since the introduction of July 2008 C02 tax system. Perfectly good cars, but with massive motortax, compare to the new lower emission engine models out now!

I bought an old-model Subaru Forester brand new in 2008. Put simply, it met my needs/wants better than the new model.

While the small majority of new car buyers tend to change often (every few years), run out models tend to find homes with motorists who would be buying for the longer term. They are buying transportation nothing more, so a big discount, a new year number plate and full warranty appeals to them. Run out models tend to have good standard spec and are tried and tested so not as difficult to sell as you would think. But only to non car people who wouldn't be as demanding or thinking about depreciation over and above the norm. Older motorists aren't as fashion conscious (or vain) so a bland run out model may appeal more than a flashy new model (their own perceptions). But ultimately these things tend to be about price, first and foremost.

Old Forester and Legacy a case where the run out models are more desirable than the all new ones (subject to the right price reductions/discounts of course).

Some new models offer little more than the outgoing. It can be a case of pay extra now for the new model and save a little later by having it to trade, or save money now by getting a deal on the outgoing and loose a little later on the trade in. Either way you're caught by the balls! :D

http://www.carzone.ie/search/Isuzu/D-Max/COBRA/201009197117409/advert?channel=CARS thats the old model discontinued in late 07 being sold as 2010 , for the 2010 new model price , the updated version is a far better machine so i dont know how they think theyre fooling people

Also plenty of old shape Mazda 3 petrols including this Mazda 3 MPS:

There was also an unregistered pre facelifted Alfa Romeo 156 GTA for sale up to last year that was manufactured back in 2004/2003. I presume the dealer gave up trying to find an owner for it here and sold it for export.

The best example would be the E38 vs the E65 7s, residual values and sales of the E38 went through the roof when the E65 was announced. Rightly so!

    I've seen the odd 2003 E60 5 series, and 1994 E38 7 series.
