Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Hi folks. I need some advice please.

My hardtail was stolen in town on Saturday and I want to replace it quickly as I use it daily. My flatmate took the bike - as well as a friend's which I was minding - without permission and they were both taken from the city centre.

The upshot is that he has agreed to replace my bike, a Specialized Hardrock Pro Disc 2009, which I bought this time last year for 539e on the Bike to Work Scheme. I was really happy with the bike and simply wanted to get the same one again.

I went back to the shop I bought it in this time last year and the same bike, but the 2011 version, has shot up in price by 210e, to 749e. I'm no expert, but I can't see why the price has gone up so much.

Here is the old one on a different website: http://www.evanscycles.com/products/specialized/hardrock-pro-disc-2009-mountain-bike-ec016014

And here is the 2011 equivalent: http://www.cycleways.com/store/product/45564/2010-Specialized-Hardrock-Pro-Disc-23%22/

As I will be forking out the difference, can anyone explain to me why it's costing so much more for pretty much the same bike?

why should you fork out the difference? he took the bike, he got it stolen, doesn't matter how much a new one costs, you're entitled to a replacement, it's his loss that the bike has gone up in price. That'll hopefully learn him to take things without asking. Stick to your guns.

I'm open to correction but I recall hearing that component costs (drivechain etc) had gone up and that that increase at the manufacturers end had filtered down in the form of increased prices to the buyer.

Your flat mate should be ponying up the cost IMHO

This recent thread on price hikes may shed some light on the price you were quoted in the shop.

Your flatmate didn't seem too bothered about you when he took your bike without permission, so I wouldn't be bothered about the price your flatmate has to fork out to replace your wheels.

Tell him you want a like for like replacement or you're reporting it to the Guards. As previous posters have said the price is not your issue it's his. He's committed the crime let him suffer the consequences whatever they might be.

Evans only deliver Specialized to the UK; this is due to distribution territory agreements AFAIK.
