Hi, we're planning a family get together meal later this month and thinking of meeting in Portlaoise as a central location for everyone. Apart from the adults there will be a few kids aged between 2 and 4, was just wondering if anyone had any advice about a hotel in the town that would suit.
    Thanks!

THE Maldron hotel is probably the best in town

    hope that helps.

You have The Heritage in the town centre. The Maldron and The Killeshin are both kinda out of town a bit. O'Loughlin's is a small town centre hotel too.

Big advantage for Maldron is it's proximity to the M7 interchange for Portlaoise and all the free parking but it's in the middle of nowhere and The Heritage is in my opinion a far nicer hotel.

recently returned from a 2 night stay in the maldron, they have a lovely big pool and kiddies pool which the kids loved. Food was great, staff very friendly and its a real child friendly hotel. Good value as well - children stay and eat for free on their family packages. Check out their website thats where we booked ours it included a trip to an indoor play area which the kids enjoyed.

    Hope this helps

The Portlaoise Heritage Hotel has 2 restaurants, Spago's which is an Italian Restaurant and Kelly's which is a Grillhouse with gorgeous steak. I know both restaurants take groups and do group menus which can save you money. The hotel/restaurants are in the centre of the town.

Well maybe I should have listened to the people who signed up specifically to recommend the Maldron or have over 50% or their posts dedicated to same .
Went to the Heritage but turns out that the hotel restaurant is closed on Sundays (why wouldnt a functioning hotel serve Sunday lunch??) so you get directed to a dark grim steakhouse across the road which feels like a cross between a nightclub and half finished retail unit. Staff were friendly but service took hours and prices were mid to top of the range for food blander than the childrens menu at a truck stop. And not to forget the parking. The hotel doesnt have any, but is directly attached to the towns multi story car park. However despite it being Sunday and the town resembling a ghost estate, you still get to pay full whack mid week parking charges, (e1.40 per hour rising to e1.60 after 3 hours).

Very disappointing all round, this sort of nonsense is not helpful for either the hotel or the reputation of Irish hospitality in general.

Kelly's steakhouse used to be a nightclub! :pac: It's owned by the Heritage. Spago's and Kelly's are both dire. Wish I'd seen your post earlier. Have never sampled the Maldron's food. Street parking is free on Sunday in Portlaoise. Sorry someone didn't tell you that!
