Matt Tuck Tells A Whopper of a Lie

In a recent interview with I Heart Guitar, Matt Tuck - lead vocalist for Bullet For My Valentine - lied through his teeth when he made the following comment
Yeah! I'm very proud of the fact that we've opened a lot of doors for the world of metal, you know what I mean? There are some people that like the band or whatever, and there are some people that ****ing totally hate us because of what we do, but at the same time, what we're doing for the genre as a whole is a good thing. We're bringing it to a whole mass of people who wouldn't have given a **** before we came along, and that sounds maybe a little bit arrogant, I know, but it's a fact!

This Whopper was promptly served with Cheese!

Seriously though, who does he think he is, and what kind of "doors" have this particular band opened - they're lucky to be still making records, and they're lucky not everyone has ignored them at this stage in their career. It would be like Trivium claiming that Metallica are now somehow more popular because of their music.

Unfortunately I think there is some truth in his quote. It's the whole "out with the old" attitude that the kiddies don't really go against until they're older and listen to the actual influences of new bands. But by then it's too late. Some new band revelling in the ashes of their predecessors have already made their quick buck.

Also I'd put it down to arrogance. I mean for a band like that too. They must be swimming in their own smugness. (I detest that sort of sh!t).

He has a point about increasing exposure for the metal genre. Was it Oscar Wilde who said the only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about? I suppose he means by opening doors that they've gotten people interested in metal.

As for Trivium well if people heard them and then went to check out Metallica's older stuff surely that's a good thing too?

Honestly I don't see where Matt Tuck has actually lied in that quote.

Lie? Its a statement of opinion, not fact. So it cant be a lie. I'm not saying I agree with him, but he's entitled to his opinion. It is possible some younger people got into metal partly thanks to them. Athough I doubt there are many, the fact is that as a member of the band he would obviously meet a lot of them, and he would base his opinion on that.

I remember seeing them support Guns N' Roses in the RDS in 2006; and it was either them or Funeral for a Friend (unfortunately i can't remember which one) and all their songs sounded the same. Then the lead singer said "This next song is our ballad." And I swear to God it sounded the exact same as all their other songs. Big metal riff, etc.

What he has said, although it may not be what fans of metal may want to hear, is probably more truth than lies imo.

Theres another oft reference quote where he says that BFMV are not a metal band, merely a "Metal influenced rock band"

At least he's telling the truth about sounding arrogant.

So in conclusion, Matt Tuck didn't lie but he's still Welsh and Motley Crue still doesn't like him :).

    Yep, that sounds about right

Ive never even heard anything by Bullet For My Valentine ... but if their purpose was to increase their exposure in the cheap t-shirts section on play.com .. mission accomplished

More so because of BFMV as opposed to him being Welsh, I don't want to sound racist:eek:

Take a look at this then. It's easily their best song:

Their acoustic renditions lend the song a very different feel:

I was at that gig and the sound was bloody awful, too muffled, bassy and flat sounding. I generall prefer indoor concerts, the sound is usually a lot better because of the enclosed space, acoustics, reverberation etc. Funeral For A Friend were rubbish and so are their songs. As regards Bullet For My Valentine, if a band uses the same gear for the whole set, dropped D tuning for every song, the numbers played are very distorted and played at a high tempo, with almost the same mixing desk levels then it will sound very similar and it is difficult to make out each note. The guy can sure move up and down his fretboard though. He was off key several times with his vocals, I hoped that his voice has improved since then singing live. Their riffs are still pretty standard too, licks, solos aren't much better either but there are a hell of a lot much poorer bands out there at the moment who think that the crap they are writing and playing is worthy to be named Metal and part of the METAL GENRE. :D

Well if you make statements like "we're alright...", you're probably not going to get interviewed too often (and therefore left unexposed). So sometimes, you do have to embellish certain things.

Also, if there are a lot of younger people at their gigs, they can draw the association that it was BFMV music that got them into metal (regardless of whether that is right or wrong).

    🤪

I must admit BFMV kind of helped me on my way to discovering more metal. Got this tune on a metal hammer cd a mate loaned me. thought it was class at the time.

its still daicent. ive heard they've gotten gayer though.

I had, in my opinion, the unfortunate experience of seeing them live in the Ambassador - brought my daughter as she likes them.

Good god, never been so bored in my life at a gig - but hell, the children seem to like them, wont someone think of the children?

He probably is right though. I got into Metal via popular metalcore and melodic death like Trivium and after a few years it led to listening to most different aspects of the metal genre.

How somebody came to like a certain type of music doesn't really matter, but while some people cry out against the "commercialisation" of metal or some crap like that, as far as I'm concerned the more people that listen to metal the better, no matter which subculture they can be considered a part of. At their height BFMV were advertised to and catered to the rather large emo (for want of a better word) subculture, and if some of those people decided to check out more metal or hardcore because of bands like BFMV or Bring Me the Horizon, that's just more support for the genres.

Ok, now I'll hold my breath, just to prove a point. No idea what the point is, but I'll prove it :P

Nah, don't do that. You'll just turn blue and fall over eventually. I just meant to breathe as in take a deep breath and relax. Bullet For My Valentine aren't worth going mad over.

if you took the first letter of his first name n swapped it w/ the first in his surname, you'd get Muck.

    any relation to Friar Tuck?

  • Registered Users Posts: 163 ✭✭jamezy

Its ironic how he "opened doors for metal" when the take pride and make sure to not class themselves as metal. They are "hard rock with metal influences" (whatever the **** that means).

Seriously though their music has progressively deteriorated. Each single gets lamer and screams "pandering to the teen/hoody demographic" No substance what so ever.

Well tbh, I can wholeheartedly say that if it wasn't for BFMV, I wouldn't be listening to metal. I first saw Tears Don't Fall on Scuzz and where before I would have just skipped, I landed in the middle of the guitar solo and I liked it. I listened to more of them and then said this is alright, I'll listen to more. So then I listened to Metallica, Iron Maiden Megadeth and Slayer and so on.

I'll still listen to a few songs by BFMV, not that often but they did 'open the door' to metal so to speak for me and I doubt I'm the only one.

Yeah, they're a popular band, I'm sure they're a gateway band for many people who have otherwise not heard much metal.

I'd rather he begged. That way he wouldn't earn his living playing music and I'd be a lot happier.
