Best/Favourite Drummers?

As the title states, who are your favourite or who do you think are the best drummers? I've stared paying more attention to the drums on tracks lately after a mate who plays the drums told me the Dave Lombardo of Slayer is considered by many to be one of the best. I'd have usually thought he was basically of the double-kick drum school, but paying more attention to him now, yeah, he certainly seems to have bill-paying skills. I'm also fond of Danny Carey, the drummer from Tool mainly cos he uses weird timings and can make the drums sound like a melodic contribution to the song rather than a beat track, and of course Neil Peart. I think the drummer from the arctic monkeys deserves a notable mention too, I just like what he does (though saying that might uncover the fact that I don't really know a whole lot about drumming). Oh and Keith moon, he just sounds like madness on a drum kit, and watching videos of him doing it just look savage!

Also, Eddie Vedder says that Matt Cameron is one of the best drummers ever every opportunity he gets, but I just don't see it, am I missing something?

If I had to choose, I'd say Neil Peart of Rush is the greatest.

    Probably because they are mates.

    John Bonham of Led Zeppelin.

Or this guy is still as good as ever.

    Neil Peart, for me.

Honourable mentions to Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater and Danny Carey of Tool.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Charlie Benante and Dave Lombardo are normally the first two that spring to mind for me in terms of who I think are the best rock/Metal drummers, with Paul Bostaph up there as well.

Yes. For example, when Geddy Lee was doing his solo album My Favorite Headache, Neil Peart wasn't available. So Geddy called Matt, who recorded the parts for all but one song in his Seattle studio, and they fit perfectly, even though it's not even slightly grunge. The drumming is one of the best things about that album - after the bass and vocals, of course. ;)

Now, I'm no drummer by trade, but I take it that this Rhythm is a drumming magazine. But how in the hell can it call itself this if it doesn't have John Bonham in their top 20. For shame.

On a lighter note, I think that Bill Ward and Brian Downey are terribly underrated. I also love the drumming of Brann Dailor, at least he was on the list above.

I'm very surprised to see hes not in that Rhythm top 20

Lombardo, Peart, Bonzo, gotta say Paul Boastaph is underrated too. Also Fritz Randow from Saxon, fairly class solo from him up on yt. I'll get the link later.

Pete Sandoval, Gavin Harrison, Chris Adler, Gene Hoglan, Danny Carey, Mike Portnoy, Raymond Herrera, Paul Boastaph, Brann Dailor, Tomas Haake, Vinnie Paul Abbott (he could play so well with Dimebag's guitar), Dave Lombardo, Terry Bozzio (don't like his solo stuff, but Zappa and Fantômas) Morgan Ågren.

    Sean Reinert
watch some of his drumming when he played with death. Unreal.

  • Registered Users Posts: 947 ✭✭✭fobster

Four drummers that span rock/metal. Brian Downey, Bill Ward, Chris Reifert and Matt Cameron. Seriously Brian Downey is a legend. Not enough plaudits there imo.

Was only of last 25 years, so would be very surprised for Bonham to appear.

Martin Lopez from Opeth's main line up was a genius. No 2 minutes of a song were the same beat. Other metal and Death metal drummers like Herrera of Fear Factory and Slayers drummer are nowhere near his overall knowledge and ability. Of course he doesn;t play anymore.
