Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi

As a split from the thread in Emergency Services regarding K-9's it came to light that a user was advised to try the IDF if looking for a chance to work with dogs.

My question is Does the Irish Defence Forces use K-9's and if so for what are these dogs used?

First off. The IDF is the Israili Defence Forces, not the Irish Defence Forces.

Iv never come across the army useing dogs, you could have a look on Military.ie. The Army's website. There mey be some info on it there.

No, we don't use dogs in any kind of capacity within the DF.

Dogs have been used as mascots in the past, although I'm not sure any unit has one at present.

The 5th Bn purchased an Irish Wolf Hound a few years ago, but I don't think its temperament suited the task.

But as for working dogs, ie sniffer dogs (bombs, bodies or drugs) I'm fairly certain none have ever been used.

    Filthy things altogether.

This topic was been looked at very recently. Two officers were sent foreign to see dogs in action. There are many many differant types of military dogs all with differant skills sets.

A recent display by a foreign trainer was held recently in the Republic and many non P.D.f. members also saw the display. The dog on the day was an english springer spaniel who would say mass if he thought he was getting his tennis ball. The answer is no to the op's question so I won't waffle on any further about the dogs.

As far as I know the DF don't use dogs, but I think customs do. Can't be sure though.

Customs most certainly use dogs, they are often featured on the news.

If you mean Custom's in Revenue Commissioners your right. If you mean Custom's Services in the Defence Forces your wrong.
