just needed a little rant really!! im just back from the vet with my 3 month old cockapoo Elmo, he had broken his leg and as a result is in a cast and has a big cone around his little head. his x rays are being sent to a specialist as he will need an operation. im finding it really hard seeing him like this and he is in pain and frustrated!! Im scard that he is going to lose his happy outgoing personality beacuse of this. Anyone have any suggestions on how to keep him entertained and his spirts up? thank you

:( Your poor baby! Our guy has had problems with his legs and cut his paw a while back so couldn't have walks etc. I practiced his training to use up his energy - stuff like leave/take it, look, which hand, stay - thou this was cheating a little as I knew he didn't feel like running away! :D Luckily we didn't need a cone because he was so good at his leave command.

EDIT - also Kongs/Nylabones etc will keep him busy. I hope he's ok. Waiting for news is the worse part - I had to leave our guy in on Monday and I couldn't keep still waiting for them to call to say I could collect him - I went to Tescos, tidied up for hours etc to keep busy!

thanks tk123 for the suggestion of getting a kong, I did so and he has been entertained to no end with it. Its anazing such a simple toy can be so effective!! Elmo is happy out have been able to taake his cone off as he isnt interested in his cast one bit which has made him a much happier pup:D

I don't normally post "God he's so cute" posts but this is the exception!

    Poor little fellow.

You will be surprised how he will bounce back and return to his normal self. He is probably still a bit dopey from anaesthetic/painkillers but believe me he will make a full recovery!

I was minding a collie last summer who had broken his pelvis..a very young dog too...he was on 6 weeks crate rest - just out for toilet breaks and food and a 5 minute walk. The owners even noticed a huge difference in a week. So as he gets better and the leg starts to heal and stops hurting him he will get even livelier!

Good luck with the recovery period!

Our vet isn't a fan of cones would you believe? He thinks they cause the dog even more stress so he expects us to be vigilant mammies and daddies! Elmo is so flipping cute though how do you stop yourself looking at him all day long :p The kongs are brilliant to tire them out wouldn't be without one. Hope Elmo gets better soon.

Ah that's great news about the kong! Just don't give him loads of treats feeling sorry for him or he'll pile on the pounds :D You can put some of his daily food allowance in it - if he takes dry food soak it for a few mins in some water so it goes mushy and it'll keep him busy. I also put marmite in our guys (you can get a squeezy bottle of it now) or some kong paste but peanut butter or liver pate is just as good - the paste was half price on zooplus a while back so I got some cans of it for him. Our guy had no interest in nylabones until he started cutting his back teeth a few months ago - he only likes the chicken ones thou :D The same story with them - a little drop of marmite/paste/peanut butter on one end and he'll chew at it for ages. His morning routine is breakfast and then back into his bed to chew on his nylabone for ages :)
