I've been hearing rumours of FCA people being deployed overseas in a support role.

Sounds odd, can anyone who would know such matters shed some light on this?

Pritty sure nothing ever came of it.

Theres always roumers like that going around though.

They were looking for support Personnel, ie Doctors, engineers and such like from RDF units to be sent overseas. I assume the whole arse falling out of the country lark put an end to that idea though....

There was one RDF doctor that served 2 x 6 months overseas. He was discharged from the RDF and commissioned short term in the PDF for the mission, then on return from deployment, discharged from the PDF and re enlisted into the RDF.

In the short term there are no plans to deploy any RDF personnel overseas (whatever technical trade they are in). Long term, who knows. I would like to think that with a few solid months PDF training, many reserves would be on par with PDF troops.

Overseas appointments are few and far between at the moment, none will be allocated to RDF bodies.

Pedantic point for you OP. The FCA is dead and buried and has been since replaced with the RDF a good few years ago.

When I did a brief stint with medics (RDF) about two years ago we were told that in the future there might be opportunities for specialised support personnel (i.e. medics/engineers) but I'd imagine that's gone down the sink with cutbacks and drawdowns in overseas msssions.

I'm in the Reserves myself, but as it was stated, it was rumour and the bottom potentially fell out of that idea. If reserves were to be sent, I can imagine they would first require a specialised skill, be of quality phsyical fitness and ideally undergo more rigourous training similar to that offered by the past and gone integreted Reserve.

    It wasn't rumour.

Reservists who underwent Integration training and had a specialised skill were asked to apply to go overseas in 2008.

About 110 applied of which about 20 were selected to undergo training for overseas.

About 12 were undergoing the final few months of training for deployment to Kosova in the summer of 2009 when the Moratorium on Recruitment and Promotions came in in March 09. This put an end to it.

There were a lot of problems with it.

I didn't here that now and that would have been excellent if reserves did go.
