Do they have a stake in Nova or did they just build it?

Early days ..i'm guessin they're trying to break us in gently, all the songs i've heard today (from 9-7) were all very "safe " tracks....hope they get a bit more adventurous as time goes on...I'm wanting to hear different tracks though....even now i'm gettin a bit weary of Enter sandman.....

    i'll get me coat.......:o

Well it still counts as a novelty for me.... on daytime radio anyway :)

Nah, don't get your coat, I think the same. Hopefully they'll cop that 'the Listnership' are well able for album tracks etc and not just 'The Best of'

For example here's Oasis 'Don't look back in anger'....yeh, it's ok but several times during the test transmission they played 'Columbia' which has always been my fave Oasis track. I just want them to move away from the most commercially 'acceptable' tracks of each band.

They need to stop underestimating us.

Have you surveyed their target market? Done an auditorium music test? Tried a focus group out on the target audience? My guess is no, you haven't.

The simple fact you're even posting about a radio station, in a radio forum suggests you're not an average radio listener. So with that in mind, step back and think that maybe it's not aimed at people that think radio stations survive on playing unfamiliar music and album tracks. If you want that, stick on your iPod and you'll do away with the news, ads and stop of flow of the music by DJs.

Really, though? Am I not the average radio listener that listened to the original Nova?

For example this now; Iron Maiden 'Number of the Beast' is right up my alley! I think there are tons of ppl out there like me?

People who love rock, yes we have every classic rock/metal album ever BUT we just enjoy hearing something that's gonna tear our ears out on LIVE RADIO......instead of the weakest-most-radio-friendly versions of bands we love?

    Surely I'm not that un-typical ?

I wanna hear stuff that used to be played on the old Nova!!!! Sh!t that's gonna rock my fcuking socks off!!

I am an ex-Grover, maybe that doesn't mean anything to ppl outside my Geographical area...? But that's the impression I had, I like my Dinosaur rock.....that's why I HATE hearing Franz Ferdinand and the p0xy Stereophonics.....I can hear that crap any day of the week on mainstream stations.

Anyway look, these criticisms are moot because NOVA will STILL be my default station AND I'm gonna give it time to mature!

Great post ct, great post. From a fellow ex-grover :)

Didn't say you don't like rock music but you are posting on a radio forum.

Have you seen the guys paying for this station? They will want good JNLRs, not the respect of the uber-cool music heads in Dublin. :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

The secret to a successful niche genre station is depth not breadth. Throwing in tracks by Coldplay, Oasis and U2 will neither attract casuals who are listening to Phantom or some mainstream rock like 98 FMs Night Train (hang on where have I heard that name before!?) nor please die-hards who'd love to hear a Cheap Trick B side!

    I dno what JNLR's are?

    Journos?

I'm not an 'uber cool music head' -although that probably wasn't directed at me anyhoo!!! :P

The only 'modern' music I like is stuff like The Black Keys and stuff like that! i like really old blues and vintage rock.....

I do love Radio Nova though!!! Listen now!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,382 ✭✭✭✭greendom

Are they planning to have any specialist programmes for niche areas or is it all just homogonised rock ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,080 ✭✭✭✭Big Nasty

Liked what I heard so far but needs to be categorised better IMO. Ya can't just go from 'The Doors' to 'Coldplay' in the one sitting IMO. Good music but it's too much like setting my media player on random!

I really hate to be negative, but that breakfast show sucked today. I wanted to like it, I swear I wanted to like it, but that DJ irritated the crap out of me, all that forced, tortuous banter and inanity just made me switch off. I could put up with it if the music was good, but Bryan Adams?

look lads. I don't work in radio, and I obviously don't have a clue what I'm talking about, let's be straight about that. But here's the thing. I'm not listening to the station to hear some wacky breakfast jock do a crazy Stephen Hawking impression, or what he thinks about Axl Rose. I don't want to be part of a gang. I just want to hear music I can't hear on any other station, get the news headlines and be on my way. It takes time to build a community and if you treat the listeners like we've all been best buds for years, it's gonna piss a lot of people off. Start slow, keep the chat to the absolute minimum for a while, draw people in by the music and take it from there.

I'll check it out again in a week, when hopefully more of a rhythm will have been established. If it's anything like I heard again, I'm gone.

I thought brekkie ok despite not liking pc. All going well till he started talking about Paris Hilton - why???

Facts of life was painful - let him broadcast solo . Said girl was Louise but not Louise Maloney I think

There were two phone chats with listeners between 8 and 8.30. Both started out with the listeners telling Pat how great it was to have him back etc, and in fairness to Pat he sounded like he was genuinely talking to an old friend. That element of it will probably die off after a while.

That was truly woeful. It involved the girl reading out a chain email that I would have read some time around the late 90s. Terrible!

What really scares me about Nova is that some small segments eg Rock Report are just so bad and the imaging is the worst I ve ever heard. given the amount of experience of people like Tighe, Dooley etc - it's unforgivable. Image wise The Rock was far superior but then again most of their presenters perished on the rock.

Truely I'd like to see Nova suceeed but woeful start. Do I hear D-ream playing in the background.

    Ah shoot..

Where are the old Radio Nova jingles.

    And Manhattan Transfer.

    ha

Right now it seems to be a JNLR driven clear-channel style AOR with a wannabe Chris Evans.

Listening for a short period yesterday and this morning!
A lot of nerves and difficulty in putting two callers on air.
Hope it gets better and that a diet of late Fleetwood Mac and Queen will not over-dominate.

Smoke on the Water again! Lads Deep Purple have recorded about 20 studio albums and 2 billion live ones! Go mad and play Mary Long or Ted the Mechanic.

    SABBATH! \m/:D\m/

What Sabbath song did they play? I'll take a guess at Paranoid?

They're so bloody safe with the music, it's annoying. Although, maybe safe isn't quite the word, as any time i hear Coldplay, i feel like killing someone.

Why on earth are Coldplay on the playlist? The music stinks to be honest, as Mike pointed out, it's like they have a few classic rock compilations in there. I wont be able to stick it out much longer, if they are playing the same tracks all the time.

Queen were a fantastic band. They did have more tracks than "Under Pressure" and "Killer Queen" though. Really lads COME ON !!!! please :)

And you're right. Predictably it was Paranoid.

Yeh, I tried but I got sick of hearing 'the hit' that each band had being played as well as quite a bit of stuff from yesterday getting spun again.

I'm with you on Coldplay, I absolutely DETEST them, I cannot understand why they are on the list. It was the straw that broke the camels back for me. I really tried too.

Neither can I understand the bizarre over abundance of Billy Idol  I always viewed him as being a joke act like Shakin' Stephens or Sigue Sigue Sputnik, but...whatever.

The test transmission was so much better with the track list...ah I'm sounding like a broken record now. But seriously....Coldplay ??? Lift muzack would be preferable!

Holy Fúck. Coldplay again! the first song they play since 6. . . incredible.

Maybe we are getting frustrated easily, because of the nature of this station and all the excitment. I hate giving out about radio. But some of the music is dire.

Just one other thing lads, if you're reading. No need to keep telling us what your name is (two or three times a link)

EDIT : AAAAAH is this a nightmare?! Now they are talking about Coldplay, and the dude from Duckworth Lewis Method is singing their songs!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,701 ✭✭✭Sids Not

Unlike some here i dont have a problem with Coldplay (it could be Robbie Williams after all...)..i'll listen to all of the stuff they play but my patience is wearing a bit on the playlist choice ....
Anyone count the number of tracks /hour yet....

I'm giving it till the w/end....if things dont improve i'm back to Caroline..(the station...:p)

That Tommy Walsh........should i know who he is...

I was expecting an hour of DIY advice..........:p

Some of the music has been ****e but a lot of it has been excellent in fairness. When I think 'Classic Rock', a high percentage is going to be '80's and while a lot of 80's music was great a lot of it is cringe. You would think Nova would be able to pick out the good ones and leave the fromage where it belongs. As for PC this morning - I went back to Richie & Charlotte on Phantom, and I can't tell you how much Charlotte does my head in!

Nova, I hope you're reading. A lot of us here were really looking forward to this station, would think of it as being 'our' station as such. I know you're only finding your feet but people only have so much patience. We really want to love Nova but are finding it not up to expectations so far.

Our company, Total Broadcast Consultants (totalbroadcast.ie) built the Nova studios, we have no other involvement than that.

For me, its the best station for a rock music lover in Dublin - but I still prefer the music on Zenith (I know, but I would say that!).

Nova is always going to be more mainstream than Zenith, simply because it needs to grab a decent size audience to bring in the advertising and be able to pay the not inconsiderable costs of running an FM station in Ireland under the present system.

If Zenith was given an FM licence with a different business model than Nova - BAI regulations permitting - we'd not need to bill as much money as Nova does and therefore we'd not need to be as mainstream.

So the result would be a station that serves a rock music loving audience with rarer songs, more obscure artists and album tracks than Nova will be able to play. Rock music lovers would like it more, but there would be a smaller audience.

But we'd be OK with that!

If licenced on FM, Zenith would sound very similar to how it sounds now - just with the addition of SOME presented shows.

    Andy.
