Listened for a bit yesterday... was up early and then caught some of the drive.

Thought the music was a bit "Meh"

Dont get the big deal about Pat Courtnay

    I also heard "Marty Miller"

I know it was "Marty Miller" because "Marty Miller" was the first thing that came out of "Marty Miller"'s mouth every time "Marty Miller" ended a song and "Marty Miller" threw up a fader

Bit of an ego alright. Check out his bio from the nova site.

Ah.. 'Money for Nothing' on now. It was only a matter of time.

Yeah I was reading that yesterday and thought it was a bit OTT alright. This bit is before he starts talking about how many awards he has won for bringing rock music to the masses.
I’m friends with Scott Gorham of Thin Lizzy, Robbie Kreiger of the doors, Ian Gillan of Deep Purple, Nils Lofgren of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street band – enough names dropped yet? OK – so its a small exaggeration to say “friends with” but I have hung out and chatted with the aforementioned!!

But better news on the breakfast show this morning. I was enlightened to a new form of comedy that I had never come across before*. The "facts of life" segment, contained a joke about a guy called "Little Johnny". If that wasn't useless enough, Pat also played an audio clip of people laughing at the joke. Quite strange.

*may be a slight hint of sarcasm.

FFS...Billy Idol...a-fukcing-gain...does anyone here actually like him....couldnt even stand him in GenX..........

And now The Who....havent heard Baba O'Riley since the test transmission....

I'm switching over till GG comes on...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 532 ✭✭✭Fergus

Yeah the amount of Billy Idol is a bit strange. I'd class him more as pop rock. If you're gonna do Idol, might as well throw in Billie Jean/Beat It or Addicted To Love. And before you know it, it's Rick Astley.

Its a bit like 80's MTV on the radio.........:(

    Ha yeah..

I was thinking Nova might as well just go with the original playlist from 25 years ago, but filter it a bit towards rock. It's basically a golden oldies station anyway.

Why do they keep playing only 2 or 3 tracks by the big acts.. I mean the Who Don't Get Fooled AGAIN, and Substitute yesterday. What about the rest.

Nowhere near as much as Marty.

Although everyone on Nova seems to do it a lot.

Was a Big fan of the original NOVA, but I'm still scratching my head on this one

Some good tracks, some great tracks, some flashes of inspiration, interspersed with mediocrity, then some terrible links, followed by lots of amatureish & uneasy chit chat, and then again, one or two glimmers of light :)

    My internal radio jury is still out . . . . . .

Will listen again in one weeks time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 532 ✭✭✭Fergus

Nothing has me reaching for the dial like those George Hook Sky ads.

They just played The Last Resort by The Eagles - what a fantastic song - so long since I last heard it.

    .

The original Nova has absolutely nothing to do with this Nova. None of the same presenters, staff, owners... noffin! Just has the same name, which I think was a good call and a bad call on their part.

Good: They had a very good chance of being awarded the licence based on that name, and it'd be good publicity (people hear Nova, they tune in out of curiosity)

Bad: People hear Nova and tune in out of curiosity, and end up disappointed because this station isn't anything like the classic Nova they remember and loved!

Well, Greg Gaughran was on the orig Nova.. but yup, Chris Cary possibly is revolving in his grave.

Just discovered this site about the original Nova. Listening to the archive off-air recording. It's 1981 all over again!!

If it wasn't so anal I'd suggest a Nova 100 song log. It shouldn't take too long to compile ;)

One for the list Mike. Riverboat Song by Ocean Colour Scene. Played (at least) twice in the past two days.

There is SOOOOOO much music out there. So much better music. Even, better mainstream. Why keep playing the same ones all the time?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,243 ✭✭✭bullpost

Is there a big enough audience out there for this type of music?

I like rock music but I'd prefer to hear music which traces its heritage from the velvets , through Roxy and Bowie , into punk , post-punk and REM/Smiths etc. rather than the American FM "rawk" brand.

Don't see too much in there for those of similar taste and vintage so I'll stick with BBC Radio 6 on the auld interwebby thing.

I totally agree... I was really looking forward to it but it really is a bit monotonous not a whole lot of different sounds in there ! Plus haven't heard any Irish stuff yet like thin lizzy, U2 and Therapy... what's that about?

... actually 98FM isn't even a rock station but it has an effing amazing deadly prize. VIP tickets to U2 paris concert and private jet over!

Not even one Rory Gallagher tune at the time I switched off. What's that all about?

Yes, wouldn't mind hearing Therapy either but NO, NO, NO to U2 unless it's from the first 3 albums which were good.

U2/Coldplay and all that worthy Christian rock NO.

I'd add Boston's "More Than A Feeling". I've heard that 2 or 3 times since the launch.

copy and paste as and when! :)

    White Wedding
    More Than a Feeling
    Smoke on the Water
    Stairway to Heaven

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 532 ✭✭✭Fergus

I'm kind of amazed this format of station has a need to repeat any track more than once a fortnight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,723 ✭✭✭Cheap Thrills!

Powerhouse on Phantom is playing Kashmir now.

I've heard more variety on Powerhouse in 2 hours than I've heard in the 2 days on Nova. :(

Got to say it, very disappointed with Nova, am watching this thread and tuning in every now and then. I still love Greg Gaughran evenif he plays U2 but he clashes with Montcrieff and I'll always listen to the Rock Show.

My problem with radio is morning so even though PC is probably the worst I've heard on Nova I'll give it a chance with my finger always hovering over the dial.

The alternatives in the morning are all difficult, I very much dislike Tom Dunne so Newstalk's out. I can't stand Ray Darcy, sanctimonious little pr!ck that he is. Tubridy is insipid. Phantom is smug and boring with its indie-lite.

Sigh, John Caddel on Powerhouse has just slagged off Nova saying they'd never play the full version of Kashmir and he's right.:(

It's beginning to get on my tits now!

Some decent toons tonight BUT why the insistence on telling us between every single track that we're listening to Nova.
Floyd's DSoTM last night was ruined by badly placed liners in between each track.

Even now (01.37), they can't give us 2 songs in a row without interuption.

Some aspects of this station needs to looked at if it wants to be taken seriously.....:(

I know it's early days but comon.

Actually hang on i've heard that before

Does anyone know who frames the music policy at Nova? Is a main playlist issued by a programme director with some presenter/producer input.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,293 ✭✭✭Fuzzy Clam

    William Broad on now.

    Bye Bye Nova.

ah here, Billy idol, coldplay, REM

Sure we could be listening to Larry Gogan's Golden hour!! What happened the likes of Maiden, Metallica, Acdc, Led Zep etc etc.

Thinking back, I think the test broadcast was a sign of thing to come, as it got nearer to the launch date more and more mainstream stuff was being played.

you said it yourself its early days, they're going since wednesday, they're getting the brand out there, people who flick stations wont wait 10 songs to find out the name of the station.

    Who mentioned 10 songs?

I said, if you care to read my post properly, they can't play 2 songs in a row etc.
It's even worse tho....what they played in between every track last night were montages of the type of music played on Nova.

Since I'm already listening to the station, i don't want to reminded of this. The station, as a whole listening experience, should be it's best advert for itself. It's failing, IMHO, in this regard.

You suggest that it's getting the brand out there to people flicking stations. If they like the music, they may stay but how many minutes will it take for these people to also get pissed off.

    It's an ill conceived startup.

I write as a person who is bang in their demographic, both age wise and music wise. I love my classic rock but beginning to hate this station already. I also know I am very much not alone in this opinion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 333 ✭✭Drake66

I'm really liking this station. It is fantastic to be able to switch onto a station in the car and actually listen to real music; not some twit droning on about his night out yesterday or be brainwashed by the latest fluffy, artificial pop hit. It's like being back in the States again.

    Rock on Nova!!!

Thanks to the law, it seems they have to stay within a 'classic rock' format..

But the commercial free evening set tonight isn't too bad. The Faces, Franz Ferdinand, Police, etc. is a bit more refreshing. Carol Dooley is doing a nice job. I'm hearing a wider selection of stuff now and it's making me want to keep listening. Which is more than I could say for the heavy rotation Smoke on the Water etc previously.

And now latter era Zep! They're on a roll !!
