Would love to plant a purple beech hedge alongside our garden.....42 meters long. Got a quote of €2 per plant and advised to plant a double line 12 inches apart. Thats almost €500..........ouch !!! :confused:Too dear for me. Any ideas please ??? Would they grow from slips ?????

You can grow them from seed without too much trouble.
    http://www.chilternseeds.co.uk have them for £2.33 a packet.

don't forget that beech bought for hedging will have undergone root pruning to promote hedging - planting by seed is much cheaper, but will be patchier.

Plus the seed will be sold as Purple But you will get mixes of Green and various shades of Purple in the seedlings ... you need to Grow at least 2 to 3 years (In Nursery Bed) to get some kind of size in them ... Before moving into your hedge location

Are they going to Be potted ??? (This time of Year ONLY use Potted) 2 euro is very good Price!! (Depending on age/size)
If bare rooted What size and age will they be... (ONLY from end November Onwards!!) Don't Get them earlier risk of More losses and no Later than end April (Depending where you are and they are growing) If you are getting getting barerooted, Plant them ASAP don't allow to roots to dry out !!!

You don't have to plant double rows or at 12" this is done to Get a "more soild" hedge quicker.
