Not sure if this garnered any/much publicity in Roscommon - maybe you could point me in the direct of a link if it did - but here is an article (including a bit of video) on his debut.

Would there be much support for a pro boxer in the county?

    Enjoy! (hopefully)

If locals follow him as well as they do Matthew Macklin then he'll have good support.

The answer is yes there would as boxing is very strong in west Roscommon with a strong tradition over the years in Castlerea, Frenchpark, Loughglynn, Ballaghaderreen and Gortaganny.

Just to correct your title Darren is not in fact the first Roscommon Professional Boxer. Jim Coffey from the parish of Loughglynn had his first professional fight in Brooklyn New York on August 11 1911 beating Young Bernard and on 12th July 1919 became European Champion after beating Otto Flint in Hamburg. He was European Champion until May 21 1922.

Shame about the basic grammer errors in the boxing Ireland press release. Would expect higher standard "It was very different in their than in the amateurs but it was brilliant".

You are right of course, who could forget the 'Roscommon Giant' - I meant first Roscommon professional boxer to fight in Ireland.

If you spot any other grammatical error except for that one then I would be happy to alter.

Do you know if this event got any coverage in Roscommon at all?

Sorry I fear you are still wrong. Jim Coffey defended his European title against Bob Devere at the Sports Palace Dublin on May 1st 1920 and won by TKO.

Roscommon Herald had a piece on Darren and his debut.

glad he got some recognition at home.

Thats an amazing shout - I thought all his fights were in the States mostly around New York.

*sulks off, ashen faced, out the back door*

p.s. do you know if there are any good books about him.

Don't believe it contains full record of his boxing career. I know his European fights are not included with the exception of one bout in Dublin.

Alternative facts are a great thing. Jim Coffey never won the European title. Kindly show any sources that prove otherwise...
